Earn Your MAEd in Mild/Moderate Educational Needs
BW's Master of Arts in Education in mild/moderate educational needs prepares teachers to fulfill a statewide and national need for intervention specialists who are able to work in inclusive settings as consultant teachers, small group instructors, resource room teachers, transition service coordinators and co-teachers in an inclusive classroom.
For those seeking an initial teaching license and masters, you are required to complete online courses.
Program Features
- 36 semester hours leads to the MAEd degree and the intervention specialist license (K-12). Teachers may also add the intervention specialist license (24 semester hours) without completing the entire master's degree. Enroll on campus or online.
- Licensed teachers may enroll part time and complete the MAEd in as little as two years. The intervention specialist license alone may be completed in 14 months.
- Students enrolling in the BW license + master's program should plan additional time to complete their program due to undergraduate course and clinical requirements.
- The program includes a practicum in which students work in a supervised setting with children who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities.
- Successful completion of the state exam is required for license eligibility in mild/moderate educational needs.

- EDU 511-Using Evidence, Research, and Data in Education
- Select three approved courses from the following MAEd specializations: Educational Technology, Literacy, and School Leadership.
- Ohio 12-Hour Reading Core Requirement
-
In Ohio, teachers seeking the intervention specialist license must complete the Ohio-mandated 12-hour reading core. Early childhood education and middle childhood education teachers likely completed this reading core with their initial license. While teachers are not required to have the reading core completed as they begin BW's mild/moderate educational needs program, they must have the reading core completed prior to applying for the intervention specialist license.
The BW Department of Education will review transcripts for all applicants applying for admission to the mild/moderate program to identify reading courses. BW will work with you to determine whether additional reading courses would be needed so that Ohio legislative code requirements for the intervention specialist license are met.

-
Teachers may earn the intervention specialist license without completing an entire master's degree.

- Application Process
-
New students enroll in the Master of Arts in Education program throughout the year in the fall, spring and summer terms. It is recommended that students apply for admission at least four weeks prior to the term they wish to enroll.
Baldwin Wallace University welcomes each student's application for admission and will carefully review the academic preparation and achievements of each applicant. During this process, students must provide evidence of their preparation and fit for future success at Baldwin Wallace University consistent with academic standards and code of conduct statements for the University, program, or profession. Students are selected based on their academic preparation; interview with members of the admission committee; relevant work, community and teaching experience with children and young adults; recommendations from professionals in the field; and personal dispositions/attributes that support success in an education career. All aspects of an application are considered and used as the primary means for informing an admission decision.
Are you a teacher who is employed by a BW school partnership program school district? Teachers in the school partnership program may have transcripts sent directly from their district office and only need one recommendation.

Colleges and Universities Attended Outside the United States
Candidates who have attended foreign institutions must provide CASPA with English translated documents as well as an evaluation of courses from World Education Services (WES).

Using the recommendation form within the online applicant portal, please provide two recommendations from principals, supervisors, teachers or other persons qualified to evaluate your background and potential to pursue a program of graduate study.
Teaching Certificate or License
Once your application has been submitted, the admission committee will check with the Ohio Department of Education to verify each applicant's certificate or licensure history.
Criminal Record
When applying for admission as a graduate student to BW School of Education teacher licensure programs, candidates are asked whether they have ever been found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony that was not expunged or sealed. Candidates with a criminal record that has not been expunged or sealed may not be eligible for admission to the teacher licensure programs at Baldwin Wallace University. If you are already a licensed teacher, please note that an expunged or sealed record may impact a teacher’s eligibility to qualify for an Ohio teaching license following completion of the program. Eligibility for a teaching license varies by state and may be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the professional teacher licensing board in that state.

Loans for Graduate Students
Graduate students in the School of Education may pursue financial support in the form of educational loans.
If this is your first graduate degree, or if you earned a graduate or professional degree unrelated to K-12 education, you may consider pursuing federal direct student loans, graduate PLUS loans, or private education loans.
Graduate students who have already earned a master's degree related to K-12 education may utilize private education loans, which often have interest rates and repayment options that are as competitive or perhaps even better than the federal loans.
Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans
Qualifying students can borrow up to $20,500 in Direct Student loans per academic year. Students must apply through the FAFSA annually. To qualify for a loan, you must be enrolled at least half time: for first time MAEd students, this equates to at least three credit hours per term. View more information on federal direct student loans.
Federal Graduate and Professional Student Plus Loans
In addition to federal direct student loans, first time MAEd students may also be eligible for the Federal Graduate and Professional Student PLUS Loan Program. Students must apply through the FAFSA annually and have non-adverse credit.
Private Education Loans
Private education loans are a financing option for students who choose to not utilize federal loans or do not qualify for the federal loans. The FAFSA is not required to pursue these loans, but a credit check is typically required. Due to the wide-variety of private education loan offerings it is advised that you should compare multiple lenders prior to making your decision. To assist with this process, Baldwin Wallace offers resources and online comparison tools for selecting and applying for a private education loan.
