Graduate Programs in Education

The MAEd in leadership in technology is designed to meet the needs of educators and non-educators whose roles include teaching or training in the public or private sector. The program blends educational theory, practice and field experience into a learning experience that develops skills applicable to complex real-world problems. It enhances knowledge of how computers, software, and other forms of educational technology can be used to improve learning outcomes.

The MAEd in literacy includes evaluation methods and instructional approaches, diagnostic and corrective reading methods, research in literacy education and a survey of literature appropriate for children and adolescents. Teachers will develop strategies to teach literacy more effectively and thereby enhance student achievement.

The MAEd in mild/moderate educational needs prepares teachers to fulfill a statewide and national need for intervention specialists who are able to work in inclusive settings as consultant teachers, small group instructors, resource room teachers, transition service coordinators and co-teachers in an inclusive classroom.

Students in the license + master's program choose a graduate specialization (educational technology, literacy or mild/moderate educational needs) as well as the grade level and teaching area. The length of the program will vary by teaching license and how much coursework can be transferred from previous college work, however, most students take 2-3 years to complete this program.

The initial license + master's in mild to moderate educational needs is a two-year, cohort-style program that begins in May each year. This program leads to graduates earning their intervention specialist license as well as an MAEd.

BW's MAEd in mathematics teaching is a full-time, 12-month licensure program for students holding a bachelor's degree in mathematics, who want to become high school math teachers.

BW's MAEd in science teaching is a full-time, 12-month licensure program for students holding a bachelor's degree in biology or chemistry, who want to become high school science teachers.

BW offers teachers the option to add a computer/technology endorsement to an existing license without completing an entire master's degree. You can earn the computer/technology endorsement by completing required coursework at BW followed by the state exam.

Teachers can earn the mild to moderate intervention specialist license in 24 semester hours and can be completed on BW's campus or online in 14 months.

BW's reading endorsement can be added to an existing license without completing an entire master's degree.

The online instructor and blended learning certificate is designed to assist educators and other professionals in developing and improving the delivery of online courses and blended learning modules in a fast-paced world in which remote instruction is increasingly important.

New students enroll in the Master of Arts in Education program throughout the year in the fall, spring and summer terms. It is recommended that students apply for admission at least four weeks prior to the term they wish to enroll.

Baldwin Wallace University welcomes each student's application for admission and will carefully review the academic preparation and achievements of each applicant. During this process, students must provide evidence of their preparation and fit for future success at Baldwin Wallace University consistent with academic standards and code of conduct statements for the University, program, or profession. Students are selected based on their academic preparation; interview with members of the admission committee; relevant work, community and teaching experience with children and young adults; recommendations from professionals in the field; and personal dispositions/attributes that support success in an education career. All aspects of an application are considered and used as the primary means for informing an admission decision.

Are you a teacher who is employed by a BW school partnership program school district? Teachers in the school partnership program may have transcripts sent directly from their district office and only need one recommendation.

Official College/University Transcripts

Please submit ALL official college/university transcripts. To be considered official, transcripts must be mailed - either electronically or as a paper copy - directly from the college/university attended to the Baldwin Wallace office of admission.

The admission committee recommends a GPA of 3.0 or above. In limited cases, the admission committee may request that candidates take the Miller's Analogies Test and submit official results if the qualifying GPA is less than 3.0.

Colleges and Universities Attended Outside the United States

Candidates who have attended foreign institutions must provide BW with English translated documents as well as an evaluation of courses from World Education Services (WES).

Recommendations

Using the recommendation form within the online applicant portal, please provide two recommendations from principals, supervisors, teachers or other persons qualified to evaluate your background and potential to pursue a program of graduate study.

Teaching Certificate or License

Once your application has been submitted, the admission committee will check with the Ohio Department of Education to verify each applicant's certificate or licensure history.

Criminal Record

When applying for admission as a graduate student to BW School of Education teacher licensure programs, candidates are asked whether they have ever been found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony that was not expunged or sealed. Candidates with a criminal record that has not been expunged or sealed may not be eligible for admission to the teacher licensure programs at Baldwin Wallace University. If you are already a licensed teacher, please note that an expunged or sealed record may impact a teacher's eligibility to qualify for an Ohio teaching license following completion of the program. Eligibility for a teaching license varies by state and may be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the professional teacher licensing board in that state.

Many teachers enrolled in BW's MAEd programs are employed by school districts that participate in the BW School Partnership Program, providing them with a simplified application process and other benefits.
