Initial License + Master's

Students choose a graduate specialization for the MAEd and also complete undergraduate course requirements to become an early childhood teacher. This license is for candidates who wish to teach children in pre-kindergarten through grade 5 (ages 3-10). This program allows students to earn multiple credentials including the early childhood education license and early childhood intervention specialist license. Graduates of the program will be able to teach young children with and without disabilities in a variety of inclusive settings. Candidates may also choose to complete certification in English for the Second Language Learner by adding two courses.

Students choose a graduate specialization for the MAEd and also complete undergraduate course requirements to become a middle school teacher. Middle Childhood requires two subject areas chosen from reading/language arts, math, sciences and social studies.

Students choose a graduate specialization for the MAEd and also complete undergraduate course requirements to become an AYA or high school teacher. The adolescent/young adult license requires one teaching field for the 7-12 grade levels.

New students enroll in the license + master's program throughout the year, in the fall, spring and summer terms. It is recommended that you apply for admission at least six weeks prior to the term you wish to enroll.

Baldwin Wallace University welcomes each student's application for admission and will carefully review the academic preparation and achievements of each applicant. During this process, students must provide evidence of their preparation and fit for future success at Baldwin Wallace University consistent with academic standards and code of conduct statements for the University, program, or profession. Candidates for admission are selected based on their academic preparation for a master's program; interview with members of the admission committee; relevant work, community and teaching experience with children and young adults; recommendations from professionals in the field; and personal dispositions/ attributes that support success in an education career. All aspects of an application are considered, and used as the primary means for informing an admission decision. The admission committee recommends a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above for initial licensure programs.

Once your application has been submitted, you will be contacted by the admission office to schedule an interview with members of the admission committee as part of the application process.

Official College/University Transcripts

Colleges and Universities Attended Outside the United States

Candidates with degrees earned from foreign institutions must have a course-by-course evaluation completed with degree verification by an approved credential evaluation service as part of the BW application process. BW has approved the following credential evaluation services: Education Credential Evaluators, Educational Perspectives, SpanTran and World Education Services (WES). This evaluation must be sent directly to BW from the credential evaluation service to be considered official.

English Proficiency Requirement

Upon initial application review, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam may be required if English is a second language. Minimum TOEFL score (IBT 79, CBT 213, PBT 550) or IELTS (composite 6.5) must be achieved. Register to take the TOEFL.

Recommendations

Using the recommendation form within the online applicant portal, please provide two recommendations from principals, supervisors, teachers or other persons qualified to evaluate your background and potential to pursue a career in teaching.

Admission Interview

All candidates for the initial licensure program meet with a member of the admission committee to discuss the teacher licensure program and their goals to pursue a career in education. The admission office will contact you to schedule your interview once our application and supporting credentials have been received.

Criminal Record

When applying for admission to BW School of Education teacher licensure programs, candidates are asked whether they have ever been found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony that was not expunged or sealed. Candidates with a criminal record that has not been expunged or sealed are not eligible for admission to the teacher licensure programs at Baldwin Wallace University.

BW School of Education verifies that students have a clear Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII) report and a clear Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) report. Forms and details will be provided to all students who qualify for admission to the program. Once enrolled, students must have the same clear reports prior to any school observation, field experience or clinical practice assignment. Although students with an expunged record may be eligible for enrollment and to participate in school placements in BW's Education programs, an expunged or sealed record may impact a student's eligibility to qualify for an Ohio teaching license following completion of the program. Eligibility for a teaching license varies by state and may be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the professional teacher licensing board in that state.

2025-26 Tuition

Graduate and Undergraduate Courses

License + Master's students must take a variety of courses that carry different tuition charges, depending upon program requirements. Students are billed according to the type of classes taken, with different tuition rates for graduate and undergraduate day, evening and weekend classes. The majority of undergraduate classes must be taken during the day.

Loans for Graduate Students

Graduate students in the School of Education may pursue financial support in the form of educational loans.

If this is your first graduate degree, or if you earned a graduate or professional degree unrelated to K-12 education, you may consider pursuing federal direct student loans, or private education loans.

Graduate students who have already earned a master's degree related to K-12 education may utilize private education loans, which often have interest rates and repayment options that are as competitive or perhaps even better than the federal loans.

Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans

Qualifying students can borrow up to $20,500 in Direct Student loans per academic year. Students must apply through the FAFSA annually. To qualify for a loan, you must be enrolled at least half time: for first time MAEd students, this equates to at least three credit hours per term. Private Education Loans

Private education loans are a financing option for students who choose to not utilize federal loans or do not qualify for the federal loans. The FAFSA is not required to pursue these loans, but a credit check is typically required. Due to the wide-variety of private education loan offerings it is advised that you should compare multiple lenders prior to making your decision. To assist with this process, Baldwin Wallace offers resources and online comparison tools for selecting and applying for a private education loan.
