BW Women's Rugby wins silver at National Championship Tournament

Two straight years of second-place finishes puts BW as a top contender at the national level.

Success for the Yellow Jacket team has grown since its inception in (year). Last year, the women’s rugby team earned its highest finish ever at the National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) Championship by placing second. This year’s team also earned top honors with a repeat performance of earning silver in their women’s division III bracket.

Among impressive stats, Paige Lesnick ’27, a sociology and criminal justice double major, had three conversion kicks for a total of six points earned during the weekend, making her the tournament’s sixth top conversion kicker in D-III.

In addition, Molly Cancian ’24 ’26 MAED received All-Tournament honors (only seven chosen from D-III) and was the leading try* scorer. Cancian led in points for D-III players – scoring 10 tries in four games, including two matches with hat-tricks**. She was the second highest point scorer in the entire National 7s Tournament, which hosted 144 men's and women's teams across the U.S.

Cancian is a three-time National Collegiate Rugby D-III All-American.

*A try is the primary method of scoring in rugby, worth 5 points, achieved by grounding the ball on or over the opponent’s goal line in the in-goal area.

**A hat-trick is when a single player scores three or more tries in a single match. It is a prestigious achievement.
