His work "Sunset in Värmland" for piano and orchestra received its world premiere at AMUZ, one of Antwerp's leading venues for classical music, as part of the World Piano Day festivities in March.

Selected from an international field of submissions, "Sunset in Värmland" impressed the jury with its distinctive voice within the cinematic and neoclassical idiom, its strong sense of narrative and its finely shaped orchestral colours.

Inspired by Otto Hesselbom's famous painting of the same name, the piece captures the evanescent beauty, mystery and magic of the moment when a glowing Nordic sunset gradually dissolves into twilight and darkness.

'Compelling new addition to contemporary repertoire'

English, who majored in music composition through the BW Conservatory of Performing Arts and furthered his studies at Carnegie Mellon University, is a Pittsburgh-based composer and educator. He is known for his emotionally rich, narrative music for piano and orchestra.

His works have been performed across the U.S and internationally. English has received multiple composition awards in recent years. In 2025, he was named a Suncoast Composer Fellow.

In the Pittsburgh area, his activities as a church musician and community arts leader have made him a prominent figure in the cultural life of the region.

The competition jury praised English's work for the clarity of its musical architecture, its emotional immediacy and its idiomatic writing for both piano and orchestra. They highlighted how the composition combines accessibility with craftsmanship, making it a compelling new addition to the contemporary repertoire for piano and orchestra.

BW paved way to success

"My time at BW played a very important role in who I am today," said English. "BW offered a very welcoming and supportive environment for creativity and expression.

"The curriculum was very well planned and had a student's best interests at heart. It was very demanding, too. In looking back, I see how the demands set a very high standard for success. I developed good habits, which paved the way for me to grow exponentially as a musician," he added.

"One unique aspect of the BW music education is that it is undergraduate-only. Many conservatories have students on different degree paths, and it often seems the best opportunities are reserved for the best graduate students. That is not the case at BW, where every student gets to work with the world-class faculty and has a chance to participate in unique opportunities," he emphasized.
