BW students were given the opportunity to do their part in contributing to MLK Week's "Building the Beloved Community" by volunteering during the Day of Service.
Held during a week-long series of special events honoring King and his legacy, the Day of Service invited the BW community to participate in two service activities — winter care kits and preparing and sorting books for the Cleveland Kids' Book Bank.
"Coming together for the needs of others is why we're here," said CJ Harkness, BW director of culture & spiritual life and leading member of the MLK planning committee, during the evening's events. "This is the spirit of Rev. Dr. King, and we're grateful for the students and Berea community members for donating their time and energy for this cause."
The winter care kits will be given to local organizations to help provide for the needs of individuals who may be unhoused and battling winter weather. The kits supply necessary items, including solar blankets, bathing wipes, hand warmers, snacks, toothbrushes and more.
While many of the kits were earmarked for community organizations, the more than 50 participants at the Day of Service were encouraged to take some of the kits and distribute them as they saw fit. The event showcased BW's promise to prepare students to be Leader Ready, Career Ready and Future Ready.
Media production major Micheal Diamond '27 said it was that very promise that attracted him to the event. "I wanted to be a part of something where I know BW has built their reputation of all inclusivity, power, honor and glory to make our world better than we found it. This is why I believe it enhances my BW experience and is the reason why I chose to come to BW."
Students and community members also spent time preparing books for donation to the Cleveland Kids' Book Bank, an organization focused on providing free books to children across Northeast Ohio.
Both causes are just two examples of the many opportunities BW students have to help better their communities throughout the school year, something Diamond said is well worth the time both now and in the future.
"That's why we're here at BW," he added. "To take advantage of everything possible. If you're a student who enjoys giving back or helping, maybe even a student who might be afraid of attending or not sure if you're doing the right thing, then volunteering opportunities are the best way to help make a change. Be the change. Step into it. Don't be afraid to make a difference."
