Marching Band

The pride of the Brown & Gold comes alive through BW's Marching Band. Known as the "Marching Yellow Jackets," the band brings crowd-rousing energy and enthusiasm to home football games.

As a member, you'll be welcomed in a community of talented musicians, color guard and twirlers. You'll build lasting friendships, earn academic credit and receive a $500 scholarship.

Who can join?

Everyone - Conservatory and non-music majors alike. The Marching Yellow Jackets includes wind and percussion sections, color guard and twirlers. While everyone is accepted and there are no tryouts, we ask that percussionists, color guard members and twirlers demonstrate basic skills before the start of the season.

What's the time commitment?

Marching Band is scheduled so that everyone is able to participate. Practices are held Monday and Thursday evenings during the fall semester from 7:30-9:30 p.m. During the fall semester we perform at football games, homecoming and several community events. There is typically a short morning rehearsal the day of a football game performance.

Is there a fee?

You will need to purchase black socks, black gloves and your black band shoes at an approximate cost of $35. Other parts of the uniform are provided for free.

When is band camp?

A mandatory band camp takes place one week prior to Week of Welcome in August. Band camp 2024 will be held Wednesday, August 14 through Wednesday, August 21. Residence hall students will have an early move-in date and will not be assessed an additional fee.

How do I sign up?

Two easy steps and you'll be part of the fun, excitement and pride that comes from being a BW Marching Yellow Jacket.

  • Register for band camp
  • Tell your adviser you want to register for Marching Band (MUL-208-S01) when you schedule your classes. Marching Band is a one-credit hour course.

The award will automatically be added to your financial aid package a few weeks after the start of the fall semester. There is no GPA requirement for consideration. The renewable scholarship will be increased by $100 each year of participation in the band, with a cap of $800 in the fourth year.

Prior to coming to BW, Machamer was the executive and artistic director of the Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra, where he was the founder of its Wind Symphony and Summer Winds Band Camp.
