The Grit That Builds Us

December 1, 2025

“A desire to do good and get good.”

Good morning BW,

The above words from the original mission of the Baldwin Institute remind us that BW was founded on the belief that education empowers people to grow — and to make a difference. From the start, John Baldwin opened the doors to students of all races, genders, and creeds, confident that learning and community could transform lives.

This semester, as we mark 180 years of courage and resilience, we honor that spirit. Baldwin saw potential where others saw only ordinary stone, shaping Berea sandstone into grindstones that became symbols of strength — strength that still defines BW and our students today. The grit that built this place continues to guide our future. We can see that desire and grit across campus:

This fall, the BW chapter of Circle K, the student arm of Kiwanis International, strengthened campus engagement and expanded volunteer projects throughout the community. Their impact was recognized with several honors: 1st Place for Outstanding Service Initiative Involvement, 2nd Place for Outstanding Club Achievement in the Gold Division, and 2nd Place for Outstanding Single Service Project for their work with the Cleveland Book Bank.

A testament to BW grit and determination was on display in the final football game of the 2025. Trailing throughout the game, our team battled back and sealed a 41–38 home victory over Heidelberg University. With time expiring, the Yellow Jackets capped their comeback with a clutch 34-yard field goal, securing an Ohio Athletic Conference and Seniors' Day win that showed what it means to dig deep, stay resilient, and finish strong.

And lastly, I witnessed remarkable talent and teamwork during opening night of the Music Theatre production of Nine to Five, where I was honored to make a brief cameo as "Mr. Tinsworthy". Once I moved past my own nerves, I saw an amazingly talented cast directed by Music Theater Director, Jennifer Hemphill, working together like a finely tuned timepiece — each person knowing exactly how to support the others. They helped me through my more than 40 lines, and as we took our bow, I could see in them a deep desire to do good, for themselves and for the world they hope to brighten.

Our responsibility now is to help every student see what’s possible and to use that vision to "get good" and "do good" in the world.

As we celebrate John Baldwin's vision, let us honor the 180-year legacy that sustains us—and embrace the grit, resilience, and purpose that will carry BW forward for the next 180 years.

With pride and purpose,

Lee
