Community Outreach

It has become a tradition to begin the program with a cookout at Edgewater Park, one of Cleveland's many treasures.

Discover Cleveland

Sunday, August 16 - Wednesday, August 19, 2015

Facilitated by the Office of Community Outreach, the Discover Cleveland program provides an opportunity for new BW students to learn more about Cleveland and BW’s commitment to service.  Participants meet new friends, connect with BW student leaders and have fun while making a difference through hands-on service experiences. The program occurs before the start of classes and BW's Weekend of Welcome.

BW's Archwood House

Discover Cleveland participants stay together at the BW owned Archwood House, located in the Brooklyn Centre neighborhood of Cleveland. This house is used for many Office of Community Outreach programs throughout the year, including Project Affinity (summer program) and Discover Cleveland (Spring 2016). The house has residence hall style rooms, newly renovated restroom and shower facilities, a full kitchen, dining room and large living room space with wifi and cable tv.

Experience Cleveland

BW is just 20 minutes from Cleveland, a city with a lot to offer. What better way to get to know your new community than through a service immersion experience?  Discover Cleveland outings allow participants to experience the vibrant arts, culture, and food scene in the city -  outings include a Cleveland scavenger hunt, bowling at the Corner Alley downtown, a visit to West Side Market in Ohio City, and tasty treats at Sweet Moses Soda Fountain and Treat Shop in the Gordon Square Arts District.

Community Service

While each year is a little different, the program has included service projects at the Greater Cleveland Foodbank, Bishop Cosgrove Center, Habitat for Humanity, Medwish International, Camp Cheerful, Malachi House, and St. Augustine's Health Campus. Through direct service experiences, participants learn about BW community partners and the challenges and assets across Cleveland neighborhoods.
