Junior Seminar—Family Communication: The purpose of this course is to thoroughly cover one particular topic within the field of communication, as well as to teach students how to conduct research within this area. The topic for this course is family communication. We will cover the various communication patterns that exist within this group dynamic such as, long-term relationships, marriage, parent-child communication, sibling interaction, and other interesting and important topics. How social and cultural forces affect family communication will also be analyzed.

This course argues that we live in an extremely diverse country, and so understanding issues of diversity is absolutely essential for being an effective communicator in today's business world. Through experiential exercises and guest speakers, students will learn first hand issues of diversity that affect communication processes in their everyday lives. We will be visiting different cultural groups in the immediate area. In addition, specific attention will be given to communication practices that affect management, human resources, sales, and marketing. Furthermore, students will learn how to create and implement professional communication workshops concerned with diversity.
