Jacket Winget applauds his cast in "The Diviners"

As BW presented "The Diviners" March 16-19, the show’s run marked a final curtain call of sorts for Dr. Jack Winget, who directed his last play before retiring from his longtime post as professor, director, actor, mentor and integral part of BW’s Department of Theatre and Dance for 49 years.

Student Tributes

The cast and crew of the "The Diviners" were keenly aware that the "tale of hard scrabble luck and truth, which carries an extraordinary message of hope," was Winget’s last show at BW. Cast program notes included a number of tributes like the entry for Daniel Telford '18, who has a lead in the production.

Daniel...is thrilled to be working with Jack on his last production at Baldwin Wallace. He thanks Jack for giving him a chance his freshman year and being a mentor to him. Daniel will never forget the lessons he has taught him.

Winget started passing along those lessons at BW as a scenic and technical designer and, after three years, transitioned to his current role as a director and a professor of theatre and communications.

Award Winning Collaboration

Jacket Winget appearing on stage in BW's 2012 production of "Follies"While he has directed and acted on stages around northeast Ohio, including Berea Summer Theatre, Beck Center and Clague Playhouse, it is his collaboration with students at BW that has been at the heart of his work.

For example, "A Nightmare of Crime" was a three-year project which saw Winget researching, writing, producing and directing the full-length script to critical acclaim in the spring of 2008. As a direct result of his work with students in the play, Winget was awarded the Bechberger Award for Human Development which recognizes excellence in working with students outside the classroom. He was also an Excellence in Education honoree in the December 2009 issue of Ohio Magazine, which recognizes outstanding teachers at colleges and universities around the state.
