Conservatory Professor and BW Alumni Head Out on International Tour

March 14, 2016

Beebop and BeyondLess than a year after his 2015 successful tour in India, Baldwin Wallace University saxophone professor Greg Banaszak will be heading back to India for a performance schedule that includes "Bebop and Beyond" at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai on June 17.

"Bebop and Beyond" will feature Banaszak on alto saxophone, leading a band that includes BW Conservatory alumni Chris Anderson ’95 on trombone and vocalist Andrea Snitzer ’15, plus Dee Wood on bass, Benny Soans on drums and Theron Brown on piano. (Fun fact: Brown plays the young Herbie Hancock in the current Hollywood movie release about jazz legend Miles Davis, starring Don Cheadle.)

Rolling Stone: "Masterful Collaboration" of "Top Jazz Talents"

Billed as "a masterful collaboration among some of the top jazz talents in the United States, Rolling Stone India recently published a glowing concert preview article touting Banaszak's June show at the NCPA as a concert that "will rival any in the world.” Four of the six players are pictured here at one of their final rehearsals before they head to India (left to right, Theron Brown, Andrea Snitzer '15, Chris Anderson '97 and Greg Banaszak).Four of the six Banaszak Jazz Quintet

Celebrating the standard classics of the 1940s, the NCPA program features music by George Gershwin and Hoagy Carmichael, the fathers of modern bebop Charles Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and Julian Cannonball Adderly. Banaszak also wrote a composition specifically for the NCPA concert. “The House that McLean Built!” was inspired by his mentor alto saxophonist Jackie McLean.

Last August, Banaszak performed “Bird with Strings”, a tribute to Charlie Parker, at Mumbai's NCPA. “The concert was like a revisit with the great Bird himself,” music writer Sunil Sampat wrote in another article for Rolling Stone India. The 2016 group is also planning to play shows in Dubai and Kazakhstan as well as the Rajasthan Jazz Fest in Northern India in February 2017.
