Neuroscience, Psychology Alumna and Professor Publishes Book, Pursues MD Degree

Dr. Amy Jo Marcano-Reik book on Brain and Spinal Cord PlasticityAmy Jo Marcano-Reik, Ph.D., an adjunct professor in BW's Psychology and Neuroscience programs, a graduate of BW and the Berea City Schools,  is now a published author, a Post-Bacc/MD candidate and scholarship winner. 

Insights into Brain Training

Dr. Amy Jo Marcano-ReikDr. Marcano-Reik authored the book about the plasticity of the brain, "Brain and Spinal Cord Plasticity: An Interdisciplinary and Integrative Approach for Behavior, Cognition and Health," published by Nova Science Publishers.

Dr. Ashleigh M. Maxcey, a psychology professor at Tennessee State University raved about the book, saying, "I see this book as not only a knowledgeable and artful description of current research, but also a story of hope – of what we know to be possible within neuroscience and what is on the horizon for future research." 

Maxcey added, "If you've been curious about brain training programs, then you owe it to yourself to read this book."

Pursuing M.D. Degree to Help Medically Underserved

Amy Jo Marcano-ReikThis is not Marcano-Reik's only recent achievement. She learned she has gained acceptance to the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and Cleveland State University Partnership for Urban Health Post-bacc/MD Program, one of thirty-five students accepted into the program.

In addition to these accomplishments, Marcano-Reik was awarded the Forest City Enterprises Scholarship for Primary Care, a sum of $100,000 to support her service as a Primary Care Physician for those who live in Cuyahoga County and are medically underserved.

Marcano-Reik was among the earliest graduates from BW's now-celebrated, interdisciplinary neuroscience program. In addition to her undergraduate degree from BW, Marcano-Reik also holds an MA and PhD. from University of Iowa.
