Outcomes-Based Analysis Ranks BW Best in Ohio, Top 60 in the Nation

ETC-Top-Colleges-2016Baldwin Wallace University is ranked best in Ohio and 58th among nearly 1,200 colleges nationwide on a list recognizing college value and return on investment (ROI). In a news release announcing the 2016 results, the outcomes-based Educate To Career, Inc. (ETC) College Rankings Index says it scores schools on economic value added.

The ETC formula aims to calculate the improvement in earnings and employability for college graduates. The idea, according to the California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is to enable prospective students and families “to identify schools that provide a quality education with proven career placement records, at the lowest possible cost.”

ETC, with data partner Job Search Intelligence (JSI), analyzed data for 1,182 4-year colleges with annual enrollments greater than 1,000 students to produce the rankings.

Index Analyzes ROI for Graduates, Not Applicant Test Scores

“Using our outcome-focused methodology, the Index empirically determines the economic value added by each of the colleges ranked within our system,” said Michael R. Havis, president and founder of the nonprofit Educate To Career. "Schools providing a practical education for a reasonable tuition-rate are highly ranked."

“Essentially, in other rankings systems, SAT scores are frequently used as a proxy for college quality,” Havis added. “Many brand-name colleges are better at picking winners than they are at creating them, whereas our system rates colleges based upon their demonstrated ability to improve the earnings and employability of students."

Characteristics of ETC Top Ranked Schools

According to ETC, colleges in the top 1/3 of the ETC Index, like BW, share the following characteristics:

  • A relatively high percentage of graduates will be employed in their field of study.

  • A majority of students will graduate in 4 or 5 years.

  • Earnings of graduates are relatively high.

  • Loan default rates are very low.

The ETC ranking comes on the heels of the 22nd straight year for top tier placement in "America's Best Colleges” published by U.S. News & World Report, and another ranking as Ohio’s most affordable private university. Read more: http://www.bw.edu/news/2015/09-09-us-news-rankings-2016
