Jamie Ryan, Ryan Korb & Josh Ryan with special guest Valerie Naranjo

BW’s percussion trio in residence welcomes friend and mentor Valerie Naranjo of NBC’s Saturday Night Live Band for a preview concert before their 7 p.m. performance.

The Africa->West trio has collaborated with Naranjo to unite musics of Ghana, Cuba and the United States to form a unique repertoire of arrangements and original compositions for percussion ensemble. Their performance features the traditional instruments gyil, astimevu, sogo (from Africa), drum kit, chromatic marimba, bata drums, conga drums and other instruments from the Americas. Rhythmic and motivic joy radiate from this aesthetic 'family reunion.' The meeting of gyil repertoire, rumba, jazz, funk, Ewe music, and even a bit of contemporary marimba repertoire creates an exciting and unique listening experience. The nature of each source music allows for fine story telling as well.

Valerie Naranjo has performed with the Saturday Night Live Band for 21 years and is the only Westerner to receive a first prize at Ghana’s Kobine Festival. She has traveled to Ghana 24 times, and has appeared with "The Lion King," Philip Glass, The Paul Winter Consort, Carole King and more.
