Four Baldwin Wallace University indoor track and field student-athletes, sophomore heptathlete Brandon Eddy (Cuyahoga Heights) and shot putters in junior Zach Marinucci (Brunswick), senior Leslie Pernell (Springfield/ Central Catholic) and freshman Danielle Torrence (Canton/ South), competed today (Saturday, March 10) on the second and final day of the 2012 NCAA Division III National Track & Field Championship Meet at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Highlighting the day was both Torrence and Eddy earning Division III All-American honors.

In the women’s shot put, Torrence threw a career-best 46-feet and eight inches to place third and finish just 2.75” shy of winning the national title as a freshman. During the last two weeks of the season, Torrence improved her career-best throw in the shot from 40’10.75” to 44’0.25” at last Saturday’s University of Mount Union “Last Chance” Meet to today’s career-best effort.

In addition in the women’s shot put, Pernell placed ninth with a throw of 43’9” and missed earning All-America honors  by one spot.  The top eight competitors in each event earn All-America acclaim.

Eddy, who entered the meet ranked first nationally in the heptathlon, a seven-event and two-day competition, finished fourth as he scored 4,928 points. Today, he ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8.78 seconds, pole vaulted 15’1” and ran the 1000 meters in 3:07.66.  Yesterday, Eddy ran the 60-meter dash in 7.43 seconds, long jumped 20’8.5”, high jumped a career-best 6’7.5” and threw the shot put 35’8.75”.  He stood third after the first day.

In the men’s shot put, Marinucci narrowly missed earning All-America acclaim as he finished ninth with a throw of 54’2”.

Yesterday and in addition to competing in the first day of the heptathlon, Eddy placed 11th individually in the pole vault with a vault of 15’3.5” and junior thrower Cristina Perrine (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark), who also competed in the discus at the 2011 NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championship Meet, placed ninth in the weight throw with a toss of 54’7.5”. She missed earning Division III All-America accolades by 2.5”.
