Spring 2020: Spring Study Abroad Trips

Spring 2020 Study Abroad Updates

BW Update on March 12, 2020

Posted at 3:30 p.m.

Effective March 12, 2020, BW is cancelling participation in all study abroad programs. Students are required to return home as soon as possible.

On March 11, President Trump issued a Proclamation regarding travel to the U.S. from Europe. The Center for Disease Control has issued a Level 3 Warning for all of Europe and the Department of State has issued a Global Health Advisory. All three recommend travel restrictions. However, U.S. nationals returning home are not included in the restrictions.

Return Travel

Ideally, students should return to the U.S. immediately. However, BW recognizes that there are currently many uncertainties concerning travel and urges students to be home within seven days. Notify the Study Abroad office as soon as arrangements are confirmed.

BW does not reimburse students for flight costs. Return tickets home should be adjusted. Students should contact the airline directly to have the departure date changed.

Arriving in the U.S.

Students may be screened by the upon arrival in the U.S. They are encouraged to follow the CDC’s directives and recommendations, which may include quarantine or restrictions on movement. BW has modified the spring semester schedule, so students are asked to voluntarily remain off-campus. Upon arrival, they should notify the local health authorities of their recent return from abroad. (The Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBH) can be contacted at (216) 201-2000.)

Academic Credit

The Study Abroad office will work with each student’s foreign university to develop a plan to complete their studies.

BW Policy on Study Abroad Cancellations

Extenuating Circumstances: If BW determines that proceeding with the program will subject participants to increased danger, I understand that BW may, in its sole discretion, cancel the program before departure or cancel the program after departure and require that all participants return to the United States. I understand that in such an event, no refund will be made and I will bear my share of any costs associated with the decision to cancel the program and return to the United States. Failure to comply with the University decision to cancel the program and to not return to the United States will constitute a voluntary decision on my part to act outside the control and responsibility of the University, and will, as a result, fully and completely release and absolve the University of any responsibility for my welfare.

Remaining at your study abroad location, may result in loss of academic credit and BW support services. Please contact the BW Explorations/Study Abroad team at explore@bw.edu with questions.
