My Master's degree and PhD are in Philosophy and are from the University of Oregon. I also have a Graduate Certificate in Women's and Gender Studies from the University of Oregon. Questions and answers

Why did you choose to teach at BW?

BW offers a small and thriving community of scholars who are committed to students as their first priority.

What characteristics distinguish BW from other colleges/universities?

BW is distinguished by both the student-centered focus and the depth of collegiality among the faculty and staff. It is truly a warm, welcoming place.

How do you mentor students?

I spend a great deal of time with students outside of class helping with writing in particular. But I also make an effort to get to know every student in my classes and that means talking to them about their lives, their backgrounds, and their plans for the future. Simply taking a genuine interest in students is often the best thing that you can offer outside of class, as it helps them feel engaged and motivated not only in my classes but in their academic life in general. I also try to be a role model of intellectual and ethical engagement in the world myself, and sometimes that matters as much as any particular content students take away from my courses.

What do students like best about your class?

I am very passionate about the subjects and texts that I teach, and students regularly recognize that energy and get excited themselves. The best that I can hope for is that my classes will help students see the world from a new perspective, and that this perspective shift will help them to live with more compassion, openness, and integrity.
