Dr. Charles Rochester Young draws on 25 years of experience in higher education serving others through his work as an academic leader, composer/performer, and educator. As a fifth-generation educator and lifelong champion for the infinite creative potential in others, Young has empowered many imaginative curricular offerings for students.

As chief academic officer, he works collaboratively with faculty, staff, students and leadership to reimagine academic programs in support of students’ professional aspirations. During his tenure at BW, both music majors and non-music majors have enjoyed new offerings in entrepreneurship, inclusion, global music, wellness, career preparedness and creativity. Young has also successfully led faculty hiring, student retention programs, pandemic response, accreditation review (receiving a commendation) and supported four of our programs in receiving national recognition.

Student success has led to awards from the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (Wisconsin Professor of the Year), the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents (Regents Teaching Excellence Award—their highest honor), the University Continuing Education Association (National First Prize for Innovative Programming), Wisconsin School Music Association (Creative Sparks Award), and the College Music Society (Robby Gunstream Education in Music Award).

In addition to his responsibilities at BW, Young has served the College Music Society as a member of the Executive Committee & Board of Directors, as treasurer, and as board liaison for the Presidential Task Force on Leading Change. Previously, he served in leadership capacities with the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Wisconsin Alliance for Composers and the Wisconsin Music Educators Association.

Young’s compositions have been performed around the globe by musicians ranging from international virtuosi to children. Young has received composition awards from ASCAP (annually since 1994), the National Band Association, the National Association of Composers, the National Flute Association and the British & International Bassists Federations. His works are widely published and recorded. As a performer, Young worked with the Detroit and Green Bay Symphonies and alongside notable jazz artists. He has received performance awards from the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and Vienna Modern Masters. Financial support has been received from the National Endowment for the Arts, the ASCAP Foundation, the Aaron Copland Foundation, Meet the Composer and others.

His mentors have included Pulitzer laureate Leslie Bassett, Donald Sinta, Marianne Ploger, Bud Beyer, Michael Jacobson and Keith Hill. Previously, Young served on the faculty at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point.
