Nancy Maier

Music Director

Nancy Maier has been music director of the Music Theatre program at Baldwin Wallace University since 1996.  As music director, she accompanies Music Theatre Workshop classes and master classes, serves as music director for main stage musicals and in-concert productions, coaches students on individual repertoire, and assists in producing the New York Showcase. 

Education and Training

She trained at Indiana University, and received her Bachelor of Music Education from Baldwin Wallace, graduating magna cum laude.  She graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music with a Master's Degree in Collaborative Piano, and was the recipient of the Valedictory Prize. She has studied piano with Alberto Reyes and George Cherry, voice with Paul Matthen, George Vassos, and Paul Gavert,  accompanying with Anne Epperson, and music theory with Mary Wennerstrom. 

Performance Highlights

She has collaborated with renowned artists such as Elly Ameling, Olaf Baer, Warren Jones, Mildred Miller, Gareth Morrell, Sarah Walker, and Frederica von Stade, and has performed original works by composer Margaret Griebling-Haigh with violinists Gwen Starker-Preucil and Beth Woodside.  She has also taught piano at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, where she received the Hinds Fellowship, and conducted the University Chorale at Case Western University.

Music Direction

During a long residence in New York City, Nancy focused her energy on the music theatre world, as a music director, accompanist, vocal coach, and cabaret artist.  She accompanied vocal workshops at Circle in the Square, New York University, and Lee Strasberg Studios.  Since returning to Cleveland, she has been a resident music director for Cain Park Summer Music Theatre since 1991, where her music direction has included A Little Night Music, Into the Woods, Big River, Brigadoon, The Music Man, Side Show, Goblin Market, Avenue X, Tick, Tick, BOOM!, Songs for a New World (nominated for a Northern Ohio Live Award), Nine, and Pippin.  She music-directed The Beck Center for the Arts, Lies and Legends, Cotton Patch Gospel, and Passion, and Great Lakes Theatre Festival's productions of She Loves Me, A Little Night Music, A Midsummer Night's Dream, A Christmas Carol, and Rough Crossing.  She has been an associate music director for The Cleveland Playhouse (Gifts of the Magi and A Wonderful Life), and music directed Porthouse Theatre's Quilters, Once on This Island, and The Fantasticks.  She has also music-directed for Dobama Theatre (The Last Five Years), Karamu House (In Dahomey), and Dallas Theatre Center (A Christmas Carol).   She has appeared as a pianist/singer/co-host on The Song is You series of concerts and cabarets sponsored by The Musical Theatre Project.  She has frequently received Times Newspaper Tribute awards, and has played keyboard for many of the touring and local productions at The Playhouse Square Center.
