Dr. Stephen J. Hollender teaches all levels of German from elementary to business German to surveys of literature.  He also teaches the popular introduction to intercultural communication course.  During his 13 years as department chair, the number of languages offered at BW doubled. Hollender is a firm believer that there is no more efficient way to gain intercultural competence and to internationalize one’s education than to acquire advanced language skills. His lively classes concentrate on acquiring practical language skills while developing cultural competencies. He has won three prestigious teaching awards at BW: the Bechberger Award for work outside the classroom, Alpha Sigma Lamda Faculty Excellence Award in Lifelong Learning and most recently the Strosacker Award for Excellence in Teaching.

His research interests include German poetic realism, intercultural communication pedagogy and Christmas. Hollender has dedicated himself to maintaining the legacy of German Wallace College and is very active outside the classroom.  He is the sponsor of the German club which organizes a weekly German table, annual Oktoberfest and German Christmas Vesper service and a semi-annual German-American Kulturabend, not to mention cultural field trips. Hollender also established Baldwin Wallace University’s successful exchange with Universität Osnabrück, which brings German students to the BW campus and sends BW students to Germany. Furthermore, he is one of two faculty leaders of the newly-developed seminar in Germany which will take BW students on a 3-week trip in the May term.
