What is your favorite quote?
I love the quote "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" by Dr. Seuss. It is a great reminder to cherish every moment.
What was your biggest mistake as a first year student? What did you learn from that experience?
One thing that I wish I would have done more of my first year was developing relationships with my professors. I saw the connections being made and how valuable they can be. This year I have definitely gotten close with a few professors. I know that I can go to them for advice and guidance for things outside the classroom as well.
How did you choose your major?
My high school English teacher was my favorite teacher. I loved the way she ran her classroom, and how approachable she was for anything. The environment she created made me want to learn. I have always loved reading and writing. After seeing that I can turn what I love into a career, I decided to major in English to also become a teacher someday.
What has been you best experience at BW so far?
I have had so many amazing experiences so far. Going through women's formal recruitment last fall was probably up there on top. I have never pictured myself as a "sorority girl", but after hearing so many things about Greek life and recruitment, I wanted to see what it was like for myself. I was pushed beyond my comfort zone and challenged to be myself in a completely new environment. Choosing to go Greek was probably the best decision that I could have made for myself at that point in time. After joining a sorority, I have learned so much about myself, and I could not imagine this year without my sisters. I cannot wait to see where this choice takes me during the rest of my time at BW.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
I would have to say that the SLC (Student Life Center) is my favorite spot on campus. There are so many great resources, both people and things, up in the SLC. If I'm having a particularly stressful day, a trip to the SLC can usually change that.
What movie star would play the role of you in a movie? Why?
I would pick Jennifer Gardner. She is one of my favorite actresses, and she is also in my favorite movie, 13 Going on 30. Sometimes I feel like that movie is about my life because Jennifer Gardner plays the main character who just wants to grow up and rushes through all the small things in life. The message of the story is to slow down and enjoy every moment you have. I try to remember that on a daily basis.
What was the best advice given to you by your parents or family members during your first year?
The best advice has really been my parents' constant encouragement. I am so lucky to have such a strong support system. They believe in me and always look forward to hearing about what I have done and what I plan on doing.
Final Word:
Be yourself! It's cliche, but it is so true. Take a chance and find out who you really are. Push yourself to go outside of your comfort zone, and know that it is okay to not have the answers to everything. College is all about figuring out your place in the world, and not always being sure about that place is completely fine. Just take a deep breath, relax, and get ready for a life changing experience!
