Upward Bound

What makes up the Upward Bound Program?

In order to ensure that participants gain academic competencies, a program of rigorous academic instruction is provided during both the school and summer components.  A weekly program of instruction in the core curriculum areas of literature, composition, mathematics and science along with study skills and tutorial is conducted throughout the academic year.  Classes meet every Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. in a centrally located site in the community.  Seminars to prepare participants for college placement test and to assist them and their parents in completing financial aid forms are provided.  Participants also receive guidance and advice in the post secondary selection and admission process during the academic year.

The six-week summer residential program on the Baldwin-Wallace campus is designed to simulate a college-going experience.  The summer residential program provides daily intensive instruction in the areas literature, composition, laboratory science, study skills, computer literacy, foreign language and mathematics through pre-calculus.  In addition, several special focus classes are offered.  These classes are designed to acquaint participants with college survival strategies and to expose them to array of career opportunities.  Students preparing to enter their senior year are offered a special seminar to acquaint them with the college admission and financial aid processes.  The summer residential program also includes a Bridge Program, which is provided to participants who have graduated from secondary school and anticipate enrolling in college in the fall.  In addition to composition, mathematics and a four-credit college course, the Bridge students participate in a special seminar to aide them with study skills, the adjustment to college life and other college survival issues.
