An investigation of attempts to challenge or transform Russiaís political and social system from the medieval era to the collapse of Communism. Some topics include peasant revolts and urban riots; religious protests and reform; non-Russian minoritiesí quest for independence; revolutionary ideologies and movements; womenís challenges to traditional gender roles; the revolutions of 1905 and 1917; Stalinís totalitarian "revolution from
above"; dissent against the Soviet system; and Gorbachevís reforms that ultimately dismantled the Communist regime.
