Preq: 6 hours of literature at 100 or 200 level A study of the major romances and love sonnets of the two most important Elizabethan poets. Involved deeply in the political and cultural events of their time, these two writers express complex views about Queen Elizabeth and Elizabethan history and develop timeless themes about love, power, religion, and art. A major influence on Shakespeare, Sidney and Spenser provided the literary foundation of the Elizabethan Renaissance and continued to have significant impact on the work of both British and American writers through the early 20th century. Optional experiential learning activities will be available to students in this class, including a trip to London over Spring break.
