2002/2003 Core Curriculum

CORE CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS
(Undergraduate, Lifelong Learning)

All B-W bachelor degree programs (except Education and Music) are divided into three areas of requirements:  CORE = 42 semester hours, MAJOR = 33-61 semester hours, and ELECTIVES = 20-40 semester hours, for a grand total of 124 semester credit hours needed to graduate. 

The CORE curriculum is central to the liberal arts philosophy of a bachelor's degree program and is designed to develop the following skills:  research, writing, oral communications, quantitative methods, problem solving, social interaction, and ethical implications of subject matter.

The CORE curriculum for all Lifelong Learning (Evening & Weekend) Students is broken down as follows: 

SOCIAL SCIENCE - 10 hours comprising 3-4 courses from at least 2 of the following areas:
        Anthropology
        Criminal Justice
        Economics
        Political Science
        Psychology
        Sociology
 

NATURAL SCIENCE - 9 hours comprising 3-4 courses from at least 2 of the following areas:
        Astronomy
        Biology
        Chemistry
        Geology
        Nutrition
        Physical Science
        Physics
        * note - one course MUST include a lab
 

HUMANITIES - 20 hours comprised of the following:
        English Composition - 3 hrs; 1 course

       
(Select ENG 111 or ENG 131)
        Fine Arts - 4 hrs; 2 courses

       
(Select from: Art, Dance, Literature, Music, & Theatre)
        Cultural Heritage - 7 hrs; 2-3 courses from at least 2 areas.

       
(Select from: History, Philosophy, & Religion)
        General Humanities - 6 hrs; 2-3 courses from any area listed above 
and/or:
             Foreign Language, Communication Studies, Broadcasting.


MATHEMATICS
- 3 hrs
        Select from MTH-134,135, 136 or higher
        MTH-111/112 for Education majors only

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES - Choose one of the following options:
        - Complete three non-foreign language courses from at least two academic departments
          with an international focus.(Look for courses that include an "I" after course number
          [ie- ART-102I])
        - Complete one year (two semesters or three quarters) in a single foreign language.
        - Complete a Study Abroad experience for college credit.
