Anti-Virus Software

A virus is a malicious, self-replicating program that propagates by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents, thereby “infecting” the files.  Viruses are intended to be passed quickly among many users.  Viruses come in different forms, such as worms, bombs, and trojan horses.  Some viruses are fairly benign and simply cause and annoyance or interruption for the recipient.  However many viruses intentionally damage or destroy programs and files.

Viruses are typically passed via e-mail attachments, instant messaging programs, or from harmful Internet links that have been accessed while surfing.  Using the following guidelines will help minimize your risk of being infected with a virus:

  • Do not open any e-mail, or e-mail attachments if you are not familiar with the sender.
  • Only open an e-mail attachment from a friend if you are expecting something or know what it is.  Call a friend prior to opening anything questionable.
  • Delete unsolicited e-mail (SPAM) without opening it.
  • Use caution when clicking on links or downloading files from the Internet.
  • If a message suddenly appears in your AIM profile that you did not create, it is a virus and needs cleaned; be wary of clickable links in the profiles of others.

Any computer user accessing ResNet or the B-W wireless network is required to have a copy of the College’s version of Symantec anti-virus software installed on their computer.  This software is provided for FREE and can be downloaded from the B-W ResNet page.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Any other anti-virus software currently installed on your computer must be removed prior to installing the Symantec client or it will result in conflicts and slow the speed of your computer.
  • Scan your computer frequently for viruses and spyware.
  • Set your computer to download critical updates from the network automatically.
  • To protect your files, backup to a network drive or portable media regularly.
