This policy covers the availability and service packages provided by the College for employee-issued “Smart Phones” (full-feature mobile phones with mini keyboards and PC-like capability that support e-mail, calendaring, and Internet functionality).
Due to the cost of these phones and the additional Internet access fees, these phones are generally not issued to B-W staff members unless there is a significant or specific need. Typically, this would only include College employees who are off-campus on a regular basis or whose duties require sustained overnight travel and frequent communication with the College. Therefore, all requests for Smart Phones must be accompanied by a VP signature that indicates approval of the purchase and whether B-W will pay the monthly fee for the data portion of the service.
Paid Internet access for B-W Smartphone owners is not automatic. The fees for this additional service are only covered by the College in cases where access is necessary for substantial job-related duties. Otherwise, an employee who has been issued a Smartphone and has not been approved for paid service will have to absorb the cost personally if they desire this option.
Due to the increasing popularity of Smart Phones, some B-W employees may choose to purchase a Smartphone on their own and wish to synchronize it with their B-W email, calendar, and contacts. As a guide to selecting a Smart Phone, the following criteria must be followed for compatibility with the B-W system.
- User must have a B-W email account on the Microsoft Exchange Server and use Outlook or Entourage as their mail client.
- User needs to purchase a data plan along with the voice plan provided by the phone carrier.
- The only software currently supported at B-W is Windows Mobil 5.0 (or higher) or Palm OS 5.2 (or higher) with VersaMail 3.5 (or higher).
- Blackberry and iPhone currently do not have the necessary technology to integrate with the Microsoft 2007 Exchange Environment utilized for the B-W email system.
