Computer viruses/worms are extremely harmful to the integrity and operation of any campus computer network and must be effectively controlled. In an effort to prevent infection, Baldwin-Wallace College provides all residential students with access to download and install the campus-approved anti-virus software at no cost as part of the initial ResNet setup and registration process. (Installation disks are also available on loan from the HelpDesk at 20 Beech Street.)
Because virus prevention is such a highly critical matter, students who do not install (and periodically update) an anti-virus program and then become infected with a computer virus are subject to the following consequences:
First offense: A resident student whose computer is propagating a virus/worm on the B-W network will immediately have their network connection disabled. The student then has the option of cleaning the virus and showing a report to the ResNet Coordinator that their computer is virus-free, or they can pay a $50 fee to have an IT technician remove the virus and install the updated anti-virus software.
Second offense: The second time a resident student’s computer propagates a virus/worm on the B-W network, they will immediately have their network connection disabled. The student will then be required to bring their computer to the IT HelpDesk and pay a $50 fee to have an IT technician remove the virus and install the updated anti-virus software.
Third offense: The third time a resident student’s computer propagates a virus/worm on the B-W network, their computer will be disconnected from the B-W network for the remainder of the academic year. The situation will then be directed to the Student Judicial Board.
