PDA Policy

[This policy only applies to PDAs that are used as personal productivity tools (organizer/calendar) and not handheld devices used by some campus departments for scanning, inventory, or similar functions.]

The Information Technology Department recognizes that PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) are growing in popularity and functionality.  Most of these devices are considered to be personal productivity tools and as such, are not to be purchased with College funds.  Consequently, these PDAs fall outside of customary IT/HelpDesk support.  However, it is the intention of the HelpDesk to accommodate the needs of personal PDA users in a "best effort" approach, providing the PDA meets the following requirements:

" The operating system is either Palm OS® 3.0 and above or Windows CE® 3.0 and above (also
   known as PocketPC)
" The PDA utilizes Hot Sync or Activesync
" The PDA only synchronizes with Outlook
" The PDA only synchronizes with the user's B-W computer

Following these guidelines, the IT HelpDesk will provide low-level, non-priority status assistance to faculty or staff members for synchronizing their PDA with their college-owned computer.  The IT Department and/or HelpDesk will not be responsible for purchasing any personal PDAs (or accompanying software) or connecting other devices to these PDAs.

Users need to recognize the vulnerability of data stored on these devices and that loss of this data is the sole responsibility of the owner/user.  Since a PDA is synchronized with programs on a PC, it is also possible that data stored on the PC could be permanently lost.  Currently, there is no mechanism in place at Baldwin-Wallace to backup or restore data from personal PDAs.
