The story begins in the violent and chaotic dark ages. There, in a legendary world filled with dragons and monsters, a uniquely English idea of monarchy emerged. Great Kings like Alfred the Great and Canute the Viking unified the country and established the rites and rituals of kingship. Eventually the invasion of 1066 by William of Normandy, also known as William the Conqueror, radically changed the direction of the country and its form of kingship forever.

Medieval Monarchs

King Henry II of England was a medieval superstar. His family saga is legendary – Henry was the husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine and father of both Richard the Lionheart and King John (who was forced to sign the Magna Carta.) Henry II’s story includes the bitter tale of friendship and betrayal with Archbishop Thomas Becket, ending with the famous Murder in the Cathedral. Henry’s line extended through to Edward I (also know as the Hammer of the Scots) and Edward III – the King who established heraldry in England and the real stories behind Shakespeare’s Kings.

A New Dynasty

Henry VI inherits two Crowns – that of England and of France – at the tender age of 9 months old. But unlike his warrior father, Henry V, this Henry was weak and actually went mad. As happens when a King can’t govern, there are those eager and willing to take their place. Richard, Duke of York, was one such candidate – he made a bid for the throne and so began a 30 year struggle for power known as the Wars of the Roses. During this turbulent time, the Crown changed hands back and forth as two powerful families vied for power. In the end, a remote claimant seized the Crown and a new dynasty, the Tudor dynasty, was born.

Henry VIII was not supposed to rule England. His older brother Arthur was first in line but when Arthur died, Henry became the heir. He was crowned at 17 – a young, handsome and romantic figure. Fired up with the idealism of youth, Henry had strong ideas about kingship and he grew into a resolute and powerful man who cemented the Tudor’s right to rule as Kings of England. Though he brought the monarchy to the pinnacle of its power, he allowed his personal desires to rule his political agenda – a move that would change England and the monarchy forever.

A Question of Succession

This episode chronicles the question of the Tudor Succession. Henry VIII had reigned for almost 40 years. In that time he had six wives – two divorces and two executions – resulting in three children. His impact on the nation and on the monarchy was indelible, but could the Tudor dynasty survive? In Henry’s will, all three of his children were named as his heirs and, in fact, all three would wear the Crown. His son Edward’s reign was tragically brief, daughter Mary’s sadly cruel, but his last heir, Elizabeth would rule magnificently.

Revolution and the Republic

Ironically when Elizabeth I died childless, the son of her great nemesis, Mary Queen of Scots, became the King of England. And so begins the line of the House of Stuart. Unfortunately the Stuarts neither liked nor understood the English Parliament. That fact along with their diffident and elitist attitudes towards the role of the monarchy contributed to the greatest crisis the Crown has ever known – the execution of a King. Revolution and the Republic sheds light on the death of Charles I, the English Civil War, the reign of the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell and the eventual Restoration of the Monarchy by Charles II in 1660.

In 1660, King Charles II returned from exile and restored the English monarchy. Could the new king, who famously fathered at least 17 bastard children, turn his fertile mind to healing the wounds of a divided England? Could he secure the Stuart dynasty? What about the succession? This opening program tells the remarkable story of a kind who, through his cunning and savvy, restores the authority of the English crown and lays the foundation for the world’s first modern state.

The Glorious Revolution

When the Catholic James II succeeds his brother on the throne, old wounds reopen. James’ mishandled attempts to promote toleration for Catholics leads to fears of rule by royal tyranny once again. Outraged, Parliament invites James’ daughter Mary and her Dutch husband, William of Orange, to invade and claim the throne. They restore parliamentary rights to Britain and thus the Glorious Revolution of 1688 is born.

Rule Britannia

Transformed from an insignificant minor state to the greatest power in Europe, England assumes a new name to match its swelling status: Great Britain. The brilliant reigns of William and Mary and Queen Anne help form the foundation of modern Britain, changing the relationship between Crown and Parliament and laying the groundwork for Britain’s unparalleled financial prosperity.

Able to speak only a few words of broken English, a 54-year-old obscure German prince becomes King George I. Nevertheless, he and his two namesakes, George II and George III, develop relationships with parliamentary leaders, creating a dynamic that survives in British governance today. This episode also chronicles the rebellion in the colonies that leads to the American War of Independence as well as the extraordinary bouts of madness that bring George III to the brink of abdication.

Survival

The French Revolution creates an anti-royalist storm felt all the way across the Channel. Would the British monarchy succumb to the populist fervor sweeping the continent? Would Great Britain withstand the military might of Napoleon? By the mid-19th century, the future of the British crown rests in the hands of an untested 19-year-old girl. Queen Victoria, along with her husband Albert, reinvents the monarchy yet again, reconciling medieval and modern elements into a stable yet progressive reign.

In four exciting lectures, two leading physician-scientists discuss their ground-breaking work in using genetic and molecular approaches to understand cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Christine E. Seidman explains how heart circulation works and discusses her research in identifing the mutant genes that cause hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a sometime fatal disorder characterized by extreme thickening of the ventricular muscle.

Dr. Richard P. Lifton describes postional cloning, a technique that has identified many disease-causing genes. He explains that hpertension, or high blood pressure, which can contribute to heart attack, strokes and kidney failure, has been linked to mutations in genes that regulate the retention of salt in the kidney.

Life’s Lessons Between the ages of five and seven, children enter a new and distinctive stage of development called middle childhood, marked by the phenomenon known as "the 5 -7 shift" This change is demonstrated by new abilities and behaviors as children move away from the intimacy of home and family to enter the wider arena of school and work. In sequences showing the first day of school in several countries, this program shows how such universal milestones are recognized by different cultures, and looks at what recent research says makes for effective education.

The House of Tomorrow The journey concludes with a look at the many emotional and physical transformations that characterize puberty and adolescence. This program shows how that biological metamorphosis - when boys and girls become men and women - is marked in various cultures. We see how whether adolescence is a time of stress or manageable change critically depends upon how parents and teachers respond to a child’s uniqueness throughout the years of childhood. The series concludes by reminding viewers that it matters greatly what we do and say to our children - they are, as Neil Postman once wrote, "living messages to a time we will not see."

Many argue that the standard practice of sexual assignment by surgery in infancy should be discontinued giving the intersexual the right to chose or not to chose surgery once that person reaches adolescence. But whatever the surgical choice, intersexuals show us that gender is infinitely more complex than shape of our genitals.

EPISODE TWO: "Women of the Country" China’s women have always been under pressure: from men, from family, from work. Now more and more are under new pressure -- from themselves -- to take control of their lives; to get an education; to have a career; to marry for love. It’s a slow, difficult process, and it is changing China.

EPISODE THREE: "Shifting Nature" China is trying to feed 20 percent of the world’s population on 7 percent of the world’s arable land. A third of the world uses water from China’s rivers. But rapid industrialization and climate change have led to bad air, polluted rivers and drought. Environmental activists, Party officials, academics and scientists are in a daily struggle over the damage to nature in China.

EPISODE FOUR: "Freedom and Justice" How free are the Chinese people? How free to worship as they please? To learn the truth from the media? To hear the truth from the Communist Party and the government? How can people with a grievance negotiate with the state?Tibetan Buddhism has long been feared as a rallying point and cover for Tibetan independence. Worship is permitted on the Party’s strict terms -- neither government employees nor students are allowed to practice. A study in contrasts, official Catholicism -- administered not by the Vatican but by the Communist Party -- is far from China’s unofficial churches with 40 million adherents who want nothing between them and their God.

The film also explores Falun Gong and the threat it posed to the Chinese government as well as examining the limits on the right to assembly and press freedom, forced evictions, government cover-up of the AIDS problem, corruption and land grabbing.

King Charles resists attempts to force a change in the succession, but removes his brother York from England for a time. While accepting subsidy from Louis XIV, he dissolves Parliament. In Scotland, York tortures heretics. Later, the Princess Anne is betrothed to George of Denmark, while Sidney, John, and Sarah continue their rise at court.

Rebellion

The sudden death of Charles II places his Catholic brother James on the throne and galvanizes the Duke of Monmouth into revolt. John proves his military prowess by defeating the rebellion. Sarah becomes Princess Anne’s chief attendant and friend, and the Churchills build their first home. The new king promises religious tolerance, while his heir, Mary of Orange, endures a childless marriage.

The Protestant Wind

The reign of James II deteriorates rapidly, as the king attempts to force the Catholic faith upon the nation. John follows his conscience and switches his loyalty to Princess Mary and her husband, William of Orange. When even Princess Anne deserts him, James flees the country, and William arrives in a bloodless coup. But William and Mary will face more trouble, as, under suspicious circumstances, James's queen has given birth to a son.

Mary II and William III ascend the throne jointly, with Mary insuring that her husband will remain king even after her death. Deposed King James makes trouble in Ireland, but William dispatches Dutch officers, to John's chagrin. Parliament grants Princess Anne an income independent of her sister, which riles the queen. The Churchills' loyalty to Anne causes them to lose influence at court.

The Queen Commands

Princess Anne's refusal to dismiss Sarah from her service infuriates the queen, and Anne withdraws from court. A plot is hatched to discredit John, who is clapped in the Tower on trumped up charges. Finally exonerated, John is frustrated that William continues to lose his war with France. The death of Queen Mary eases tensions, and Anne returns to court with the Churchills, who proudly introduce their daughter Henrietta. Foolishly, they also introduce Anne to Sarah's poor distant cousin, the duplicitous Abigail Hill.

Reconcilliation

At the court of Charles II, young John Churchill advances his career by serving the king's bastard son, Monmouth, in the field of battle, and by bedding the king's mistress, the Duchess of Cleveland. Young Sarah Jennings is also advancing at court, by befriending the king's sister-in-law, the Duchess of York, and teaching the York princesses, Mary and Anne, the art of gambling. At a court masque, the two meet, and sparks fly.

Bridals

Questions of religion and wealth dominate the negotiations for two marriages. The king’s niece, Mary, is betrothed to the Protestant Prince William of Orange, in hopes of quieting growing alarm regarding the king’s brother and heir, the Catholic Duke of York. Meanwhile, John and Sarah dismay their parents, who demand advantageous marriages for them both. Though penniless, the two are married, thanks to the machinations of the Duchess of York.

Plot Counter-Plot

The infamous Titus Oates whips up anti-Catholic sentiment by concocting fictitious treasons. Lord Shaftesbury has bigger plans: to legitimize the Duke of Monmouth and supplant the Duke of York's succession. Sidney Godolphin mourns the death of his wife in childbirth, while John continues to rise in favor for his military advice, and Sarah adjusts to marriage to a high-ranking, but poorly paid, soldier.

The political situation in England complicates Anne’s reliance on Sarah, as Whigs and Tories jockey for position and power. The War of the Spanish Succession rages in Europe, and John’s string of victories against the French proves his military expertise. In appreciation, Queen Anne awards him a dukedom.

Breaking The Circle

Sarah’s bullying tactics toward the queen are in sharp contrast to Abigail’s subtle manipulations, and she falls from favor. Construction of the palace of Blenheim is stalled due to lack of funds. Harley gains power and influence, while Sidney is dismissed from the government, and John resigns in protest. Queen Anne turns to Abigail for comfort at the death of her husband, Prince George.

Not Without Honour

The series winds down in this final episode, in which the aging Queen Anne continues to depend upon Abigail and Harley, while excluding the Churchills from favor. John and Sarah withdraw from public life until the queen’s death brings the ascension of George I, who allows them to enjoy their final days as heroes of the nation.

Part I

The research in this program focuses on how the East and West view the world. Westerners tend to focus on objects in a scene independently of each other. Easterners view the whole and the interaction between objects. In each instance, different parts of the brain are activated and different conclusions drawn.

Part II

Perspective of self and others is explored. The West is more ego-centric and individualistic, seeing from the observers point of view. The East tends to be retrospective, considering what others think. For example, in the West you would give lots of drink choices, allowing individual choice. In the East it is polite to consider the persons favorite drink and offer that. This perspective leads the West to value the self whereas the East places importance on the group.

But the ground for the protests had been laid in the weeks and months preceding the mass outpouring of opposition. GOODBY MUBARAK! takes us to Egypt during the fall of 2010, in the run-up to legislative elections. What we discover is a revolution-in-waiting already simmering under the surface of Egyptian society.

Over several weeks, the documentary crew travels the country-from Cairo, to Alexandria, to the industrial city of El-Mahalla El-Kubra-introducing us to activists, politicians, and ordinary Egyptians. Activist Mahitav el Gilani walks through a market an night, urging people to sign a petition calling for the end of Egypt’s draconian Emergency Law and for free elections. "If this conversation is broadcast on TV, we’ll be arrested," one woman tells her. Later, a man she approaches says he hopes she makes it out of the neighborhood alive.

We also meet oppostion candidates in the midst of their campaigns-feminist Gameela Ismail, liberal politician Ayman Nour (who was sentenced to five years in prison after winning election in 2005) and Muslim Brotherhood members Saad El Husseini and Hamdi Hassan. They may not agree on much, but all see endemic corruption, the repressive Emergency Law and the lack of political freedom as the key element that must change if the Arab world’s largest and most influential country is to move forward.

And while young, web-savvy activists get much of the credit for the demonstrations, GOODBYE MUBARAK!shows just how deep opposition to the regime ran in the months leading up to the revolution "We only have corrupt and old leaders with nothing to offer," says one angry pensioner. Another adds, "The solution is in the hands of our 12 million jobless kids. they need to go out, demonstrate, and overthrow the regime."

Within weeks, Mubarak’s opponents-led by many of those we meet in this film-would be doing just that. GOODBYE MUBARAK!is an invaluable portrait of a crucial moment in Egyptian society.
