Computer Repair Fees

Sometimes, you will encounter computer problems that are more than you can handle on your own.  The HelpDesk can often assist you in such cases.  The following services are currently available:

 

$100      ResNet Virus and Malware Removal & Troubleshooting

A ResNet technician will diagnose and attempt to repair all software / operating system-related issues (as described by the student); Install Symantec Endpoint anti-virus (if necessary) and update the virus definition files; Scan for and remove all virus & malware (spyware / adware) threats from the computer; Remove potentially harmful programs* from the computer; Install all available operating system updates.

 

$75        Operating System Reinstallation WITH Student Data Backup

A ResNet technician will perform the Student Data Backup Service (see below); reinstall the licensed version of the Operating System; install all device drivers; install all available operating system updates; install Symantec Endpoint anti-virus and update the virus definition files; restore the backed-up student data files to the computer and scan them for viruses/malware until clean. Please note that no additional software will be installed or re-installed (including Microsoft Office).


$50        Operating System Reinstallation WITHOUT Student Data Backup

A ResNet technician will reinstall the licensed version of the Operating System; install all device drivers; install all available Operating System updates; install Symantec Endpoint anti-virus and update the virus definition files. Please note that no additional software will be installed or re-installed (including Microsoft Office).


$25        Student Data Backup Only

A ResNet technician will back-up the student’s user profile folders (including: ‘My Desktop’, ‘My Documents’, ‘My Music’, ‘My Pictures’ & ‘My Video’) onto an external hard drive. The specified folders will be available to be restored to the student’s repaired / replacement computer. A copy of these folders can also be burned to DVD(s) at the cost of $2.50 per DVD.

 

$50        Student Data Recovery

A ResNet technician will use data recovery software to scan for recoverable files on the student’s computer. All recoverable files will be saved to an external hard drive. The student will then specify which of their recovered files are to be restored to their repaired / replacement computer. The student may also elect to have their recovered files burned to DVD(s) at the cost of $2.50 per DVD

 

FREE      Wireless Configuration

A ResNet technician will configure your computer’s wireless network card to access the BW Student Wireless Network.  Please Note:  Your computer’s wireless card must be fully-functional and the correct Windows/Macintosh wireless device drivers, updates and programs required for wireless network connectivity must also be installed and functional.  Should it be determined that additional service (installation of drivers / updates / programs) is required, you may opt to complete this on your own or submit your computer for ResNet PAID Service (Green Form).

 

FREE      Symantec Endpoint Anti-Virus Installation*

A ResNet technician will remove all currently installed anti-virus software from your computer; Install BW’s current version of Symantec Endpoint anti-virus software and update the virus definition files.

* Requires removal of any third party anti-virus software.

 

BW is an authorized Apple repair facility.  Students with Apple computers which are still under warranty and have hardware problems can have their computer fixed for free at the HelpDesk.  Other software or virus issues are handled on the same rate schedule above as Windows-based computers.

 

In order to take advantage of these services, you must be a BW student, your computer must be able to power-up successfully, and be able to load the Windows environment.   When coming to the HelpDesk for service, ONLY bring your CPU tower (cords not necessary) or for laptops, bring your power cord as these vary by model.  You will be asked to sign a waiver before leaving your computer to be repaired.

 

Services may be paid in cash, check, or with your Jacket Express Card.  You will be called when your computer is ready and you are responsible for picking up the computer from 20 Beech Street. 

 

 

 

NOTE:  Regarding the removal of potentially harmful programs:

 

File sharing programs such as Ares, Bearshare, Frostwire, Limewire, Morpheus, WinMX, etc., and BitTorrent-type programs such as ABC BitTorrent, Azeureus, Bit Connect, Bit Tornado, etc., pose a potential risk of virus and malware re-infection.  Please be advised that for this reason, the ResNet technician assigned to perform the Troubleshooting/Virus and Malware Removal service on your computer will also remove all file sharing and Bit Torrent-type programs from your computer.  Furthermore, should you need to return your computer for follow-up Troubleshooting/Virus and Malware Removal service within two weeks of the initial service and it is determined by a ResNet technician that any such software has been re-installed on your computer after the initial service was performed, you will be charged the full price for the follow-up repair service.
