Disability Services for Students

WELCOME

Welcome to Baldwin-Wallace College!  As students embarking on a new and exciting journey, we at Disability Services for Students (DSS) want you to know that our office supports the College mission to assist “students in their preparation to become contributing, compassionate citizens of an increasingly global society and encourages their pursuit of personal and professional excellence.”  In addition to providing support services and appropriate academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities, the DSS office strives to equip students with disabilities with the knowledge and skills necessary to become responsible, independent, and active learners in an ever-changing society as well as facilitate the students’ successful transition through college.

However, if the prospective student discloses a disability, discussion may take place, but such information may not adversely affect admission. Once admitted to the college, a student may choose whether or not to disclose a disability.  A student with a disability will not receive accommodations unless s/he requests accommodations after admission and follows the college procedures for obtaining accommodation services.

ELIGIBILITY FOR SERVICES

Under the Americans with Disability Act (1990) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973), a person has a disability if he or she has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities (e.g., walking, standing, seeing, speaking, hearing, breathing, learning, working, or taking care of oneself), has a record of such an impairment, or is regarded as having such an impairment.  Once admitted to B-W, students may choose whether or not to disclose a disability. However, students with disabilities will not receive accommodations unless they disclose their disability to the DSS office, make a formal request for accommodations, and follow the College procedures for obtaining accommodations.

To be eligible for disability-related services (including academic accommodations), students are responsible for identifying themselves and disclosing information about their disability to Disability Services for Students (includes the B-W Learning Center).  Students must provide written documentation of their disabling condition as defined by the ADA and Section 504 to Director of the Learning Center, Ritter Library, Rm. #213, Berea, OH 44017, fax: 440-826-3832.

Once eligibility has been established, the student and DSS staff member will work together to determine appropriate accommodations.
