Disability Services

Information for Parents

Parents, families and guardians are instrumental to the overall success of students at Baldwin Wallace University.  The information in this section is to help parents become well informed about students rights and responsibilities as they transition from high school to the university.  It is our hope that the information on these pages will help you help your student successfully transition to BW.

Once admitted, please have your student contact Disability Services for Students, so he or she has a better understanding of what to expect.  We will provide your student with information on how to Get Connected with our office.

Encourage your student to complete the application for Disability Services and submit the appropriate verification form to their physician or diagnostician.  Documentation can be sent to our confidential fax machine 440-826-3832 or emailed to disability@bw.edu.

Your student should call to schedule the Student Welcome Meeting.  Many appointments occur the Friday before summer orientation or the first week of classes.  During this Student Welcome Meeting, your student will meet with a DSS staff member to discuss the functional limitations of his/her disability and learn how to access available resources.  In addition, appropriate accommodations (if any) will be discussed.  If you accompany your student to the meeting, we will bring you in after we have talked to your student.

Once the semester begins, it is your student's responsibility to utilize the services, follow the process, policies and procedures.  DSS staff and BW faculty are not able to answer questions about your student's progress in their courses.  We encourage you to talk to your student and formulate a plan on how he or she will communicate with you regarding his/her progress during the semester.
