Five Million Challenge Grant Spurs Science Facility Efforts

Transforming Lives: The Campaign for Baldwin-Wallace College has received a major boost in the form of a $5 million challenge from James A. Thomas ’59, of Los Angeles, a member of the B-W Board of Trustees. To meet the Thomas Challenge and claim this gift, which would match the largest single gift in College history, B-W must raise $5 million in additional funding for its center for science and innovation by Dec. 31, 2010.

Jim Thomas

“We are deeply grateful to Jim Thomas for providing this magnificent challenge for the Baldwin-Wallace community,” said
B-W President Richard Durst. “One of the highest priorities for this campaign is to expand and upgrade our learning environment for science, technology and innovation. Successfully meeting this challenge will be a major step in that direction. Jim’s commitment to our College and its mission are an inspiration to us all.”

Thomas, the chairman and CEO of Thomas Properties Group LLC, earlier had made a $1 million commitment to the campaign, but told his fellow trustees this fall that he recognized the importance of expanding and enhancing the science facilities at B-W and that he hoped his gift would lead others to step up and help make the project a reality.

“The response to the Campaign from trustees, alumni and friends of the College has been overwhelming,” said Willard Carmel ’52, campaign co-chair. “Jim’s wonderful committment takes us past $72 million. But, we cannot start a project before we have the funding in hand. With growing costs for new construction and renovation, it will take the finest efforts from us all if we are to successfully fund the three capital projects before us. We’re indebted to Jim Thomas for his philanthropic leader-ship in guiding us toward that destination.”
