BW Business Division Offers Free Tax Preparation as an IRS VITA Site
BW's 2014 Tax Clinic will run on six Sundays during the months of February and March 2014. Area residents in need of help can drop-in for tax preparation services on the following Sundays-only: February 16 and 23, March 2, 16, 23 and 30, beginning at 9 a.m.
Tax preparation for 2013 returns will be on a first-come-first-serve basis only and limited to the first 25 people signed in. Preparation services are located in Kamm Hall – main lobby area, 191 E. Center Street, Berea.
VITA Designation Allows E-filing
The BW Tax Clinic has partnered with the Cuyahoga County EITC Coalition to make the clinic an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax preparation site targeting lower income individuals. Because of this partnership, tax returns prepared can be E-Filed, thereby reducing the client’s wait time for a refund.
It's important to note that returns will not be prepared without the appropriate documentation for income and related expenses. Identification is required of the taxpayer and a Social Security card must be presented for each dependent claimed on the return.
Supervised Experience for Students
Under the supervision of faculty, The BW Tax Clinic allows students to gain valuable experience working with clients in real life situations, while providing a service to the community. Participating BW students have taken individual income tax courses as well as participated in specific software training. Because this is an IRS VITA site, all students have passed one or more of the IRS exams required to participate as a volunteer.
Though the Clinic provides free tax preparation, donations to the Baldwin Wallace University Accounting Association can be made to support accounting scholarships. For more information, faculty advisor, Lynn Schulte can be reached at email@example.com or 440-826-8140.
