BW’s Free Tax Clinic Offers E-filing as Newly Designated IRS VITA Site

Baldwin Wallace University’s Tax Clinic has a new community partnership, new IRS designation and new ability to E-file returns.

The Tax Clinic, presented by the Division of Business Administration, will offer free tax preparation services to the local community for six Sundays during the months of February and March, starting February 10.

This year, the clinic has partnered with the Cuyahoga County EITC Coalition to make the clinic an IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax preparation site targeting individuals with income under $50,000. Because of this partnership, tax returns prepared can now be E-Filed, thereby reducing the client’s wait time for a refund.

Area residents in need of help can call for an appointment or drop in for tax preparation services on February 10, 17 and 24, as well as March 3 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Kamm Hall, 191 E. Center Street, Berea. (Please note that Tax Clinic services will not be available on Sunday March 10 or 17 due to BW Spring Break.)

Appointments can be made now by calling 211, a United Way assistance help line. Returns are prepared on a first-come, first-serve basis for those without an appointment. Returns will not be prepared without the appropriate documentation for income and related expenses. Identification is required of the taxpayer and a Social Security card must be presented for each dependent claimed on the return.

Under the supervision of faculty, The BW Tax Clinic allows students to gain valuable experience working with clients in real life situations, while providing a service to the community. Participating BW students have taken individual income tax courses as well as participated in specific software training. Because this is an IRS VITA site, all students have passed one or more of the IRS exams required to participate as a volunteer.

Though the Clinic provides free tax preparation, donations to the Baldwin Wallace University Accounting Association can be made to support accounting scholarships.
