Robert C. Helmer began his tenure July 1 as the ninth president of Baldwin Wallace University.
He succeeds Richard W. Durst, who was president since 2006.

Leading BW–Helmer Engages the Community

He shares ice cream with Stinger, jokes with faculty and staff, and welcomes thousands of alumni and students to campus. All with a smile and engaging personality that evokes pride in his new home.

Early in his tenure, BW President Robert Helmer already knows what YJ4L means and is ready to cheer on varsity athletes, delve into student research, and attend Conservatory events with his wife, Linda, and two daughters.

In Berea, he's already a familiar face to civic leaders, neighbors, and with local merchants and others. His calendar for the months ahead is quickly filling with meetings and appointments.

"Dynamic Leader with Demonstrated Strengths"

Helmer comes to BW after serving nine years as president of Lourdes University in Sylvania, Ohio. While there, he accrued an impressive list of accomplishments.

"Bob Helmer established himself as a dynamic leader with demonstrated strengths in curriculum development, enrollment, campus life, fund raising and facility development," said Paul Carleton, chair of the BW Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee.

A Visionary Who Fosters Community

He is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and The Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. Helmer received his doctorate from Marquette University and his J.D. from the University of Toledo. His scholarly interests include early Christian origins and apocalyptic literature.

His keen insight and willingness to move boldly have impressed higher education professionals and earned him praise as a visionary. In combination with his personal warmth and community-focused leadership style, he regularly demonstrates a special ability to engage students, alumni, faculty and staff, and others.

"We are confident he will continue the BW tradition of exceptional leadership as we enter the next phase of growth and development at Baldwin Wallace," noted Carleton. "We look forward to working with him to provide the finest opportunities for learning and personal growth for each student."
