BW & Beck Center Stage "Next to Normal"

Baldwin Wallace University's celebrated Music Theatre Program will renew its award-winning collaboration with Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood, staging the emotional musical powerhouse, NEXT TO NORMAL, directed by Victoria Bussert.

The musical, called "brave" and "breathtaking" by The New York Times, will run weekends from March 1 to April 21, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. in the Beck's Studio Theater. (Note: There are no performances on Sundays March 31 or April 14.) (UPDATE: Starting March 28, Next to Normal will offer Thursday performances. Get tickets early! Many shows are selling out.)

NEXT TO NORMAL, book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, shatters the facade of a suburban family dealing with the traumatic effects of mental illness and features a compelling Tony Award-winning pop rock score by Tom Kitt. Winner of three Tonys and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, this intense, emotional, yet ultimately hopeful musical makes a direct grab for the heart with a story that takes us inside the lives of a typical American family that’s anything but typical.

Honoring "the Beauty and Ferocity of the Human Spirit"

Bussert told Broadway World, "Not only is NEXT TO NORMAL a powerful, startling, ground-breaking work in the American musical theater repertoire; it is an experience that compels all of us to really look, listen and feel. At times it is astonishing, at other times agonizing  but ultimately it honors the beauty and ferocity of the human spirit no matter the flaws."

The New York Times said NEXT TO NORMAL "is something much more than a feel-good musical. It is a feel-everything musical."

BW-Beck Collaboration Highly Praised

Last year, the inaugural collaboration between Beck and BW, SPRING AWAKENING, produced a raft of rave reviews and awards for Best Musical, Best Director (Bussert) and Best Choreographer (Gregory Daniels) from the Cleveland Critics Circle, and Best Actor and Actress (non-equity) and Best Costumes from Broadway World.

For NEXT TO NORMAL, BW alumna Katie DeBoer '97 takes on the starring role of the bipolar depressive, Diana, while BW music theatre professor Scott Plate plays Diana's steadfast husband, Dan. Carroll and Plate appear courtesy of the Actors' Equity Association. They are joined by a second BW music theatre graduate, Phil Carroll '08, playing Dr. Madden and Dr. Fine; and three BW students, Chris McCarrell '13, Caroline Murrah '16 and Christopher Ellis Dawson '16, to round out the talented cast.

Musical direction is by BW faculty member Nancy Maier. Jeff Herrmann, BW professor of theatre, is handling the production design, while BW junior David Zody '14 is the choreographer for the show.
