New Digital Media and Design Major Reflects Growth of Online Communication
In response to the rapid growth of online and interactive communications-based media, BW is adding to its communication offerings a new major, Digital Media and Design.
A dynamic program combining comprehensive coursework and hands-on study, it offers two tracks of specialization – interactive media design and visual media design. Students learn techniques for creating effective web sites and digital communications through an interdisciplinary curriculum integrating communication, computing and art.
“The growth of web-based communication has created a demand for professionals who are skilled in its usage. Today, as well as for years to come, there is a need for individuals who have the creative, artistic, communication and technical skills to create visual impact, write targeted messages and enhance usability for a proliferation of media that continues to evolve,” said Jodi Tims, professor and chair of mathematics and computer science.
“Whether students opt to major solely in this area or combine it as part of a double major, digital media and design provides students with the types of skills employers look for when hiring – problem-solving, communications, analytical, computing and more,” she continued.
“But these competencies are the foundation. From a practical standpoint, students in the program gain skills in graphic design, photography/videography, programming and web design, among others,” she added.
