B-W Presents Two Dark Comedies: Mr. Marmalade and Some Girls

A pair of deliciously dark comedies, directed by Jack Winget, will play in repertory at Baldwin-Wallace College for a late February run. Mr. Marmalade, by Noah Haidle, will be performed Feb. 18, 23 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Some Girls, by Neil LaBute, will be performed Feb. 22 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and February 19 and 26 at 2 p.m. in the William Allman Theatre at the Kleist Center for Arts and Drama, 95 East Bagley Road, Berea.

Noah Haidle, a Princeton University and Juilliard graduate, is known for his dark pieces on a range of topics from the outlandish world of a disturbed cat to the seamy side of relationships. Mr. Marmalade, which revolves around a 4-year-old girl with an abusive, drug-addicted imaginary friend, is described as "a savage black comedy about what it takes to grow up in these difficult times."

Issues like cynicism and egotism are the driving force behind many of Neil Labute's comedic works and he often writes about issues that other playwrights fear to cover. LaBute is also noted for a successful film career, directing such films as Nurse Betty and Death at a Funeral. In Some Girls, LaBute continues his exploration of the dysfunctional side of modern love, with a central character who panics on the eve of his wedding.

Winget, a professor of theatre at Baldwin-Wallace College, and actor/director in the Cleveland area, also directed Alas, Poor Yorick, in last fall’s New Play Festival. Other recent directing credits include Moon over Buffalo, Crimes of the Heart and the world premiere of his play, A Nightmare of Crime.
