Graduate/Professional PLUS loans are available to help graduate students finance any remaining educational costs not covered by other forms of student financial aid. The Graduate/Professional Student PLUS is similar to the Parent PLUS program, as the terms and conditions include:

  • A determination that the applicant does not have an adverse credit history.
  • Repayment beginning on the date of the last disbursement of the loan.
  • A fixed interest rate of 6.84 percent for loans disbursed after July 1, 2015.
  • A fee of 4.292 percent of the loan amount, deducted proportionately each time a loan disbursement is made (subject to change).


Graduate PLUS borrowers can apply for 2015-16 PLUS Loans after May 11, 2015.

  1. File the required Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at to determine the maximum loan eligibility through the Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan Program before applying for a Graduate/Professional PLUS loan. You will need a FSA ID number to complete this process. How to create a FSA ID.

  2. Download and complete the Enrollment Worksheet for Independent Students on the Financial Aid Forms page and email it to

  3. Determine the Graduate/Professional PLUS Loan amount needed to cover the cost of your education. Before applying for a Graduate/Professional PLUS loan, you must apply for your maximum eligibility in Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loans.

  4. Complete the Entrance Counseling requirement:
    • Visit
    • Click on the green "Log In" button.
    • Sign in with your Username and FSA ID.
    • Click on "Complete Counseling" and follow the instructions for "Entrance Counseling."

  5. Apply for the Graduate PLUS and complete the electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN):

    • Click on the green "Log In" button.
    • Sign in with your Username and FSA ID.
    • Click on "Request A Direct PLUS Loan" and follow the instructions for the "Graduate PLUS."
    • If approved, click on "Complete Master Promissory Note" and follow the instructions.

  6. The Department of Education will transmit loan application information to BW.

  7. BW will finalize the loan through the Department of Education.

Federal Direct GradPLUS Change Request Form

This form should only be used to submit Federal Direct PLUS Loan change requests. When changing the amount of your Federal Direct PLUS Loan, please keep the following in mind:

  1. Maximum Annual Loan Limit
    • Cost of education less any other financial aid received by the student.
    • Borrowers are encouraged to budget their costs for the entire academic year when determining the amount of PLUS loan needed.

  2. Fees
    • There is a 4.292 percent loan origination fee.

Federal Loan Consolidation – Information for Graduate/Professional PLUS borrowers who have PLUS loans with different lenders/servicers and wish to combine their PLUS loans into one new Consolidation Loan. Graduate/Professional PLUS loans can be consolidated with other federal education loans, such as Stafford and Perkins loans.
