Request for a Special Circumstance Review (2011-2012 Academic Year)

Federal laws governing financial aid allow the Office of Financial Aid to recalculate financial need in cases of special circumstances not taken into consideration by the Free Application of Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

To ensure fairness and compliance with the federal regulations, there are limits to which circumstances can be considered. Special Circumstances are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Common special circumstances include, but are not limited to, documented cases of:

  • changes in income
  • high/medical/dental bills not covered by insurance
  • divorce, separation or death of a parent.

The Office of Financial Aid is not able to consider circumstances such as high mortgage, car payments or consumer debt.

If your family's financial situation has changed for the worse since last year (or since you filed your FAFSA), you may download the Special Circumstance Review packet via the link below. The packet includes:

  • 11/12 Special Circumstance Review Request
  • 11/12 Projected Income Worksheet
  • 11/12 Verification Worksheet

The forms above outline the required supporting documentation that must be submitted at the same time. Please do not submit partial information - this WILL delay your review.

Please note: your request may not result in an increase of your financial aid eligibility.

If you meet one of the situations described above, download the 2011-2012 Special Circumstance Review Packet.

If you do not meet one of the situations described above, please contact our office at 440-826-2108 or finaid@bw.edu so that we may determine if your situation is reviewable based on federal guidelines.
