Getting Involved: Co-curriculars Enrich College Life

Co-curricular activities complement the learning experience. They can boost resumes, facilitate career networking and bridge classroom theory to real-world practice. Studies show that students who participate in them are more likely to enjoy college life and succeed academically than those who are uninvolved. For these reasons and more, residence hall and commuter students alike benefit from ongoing campus involvement.

Athletics

If your student is among the nearly 25 percent of BW students involved in athletics, you know of its importance. BW also offers club and intramural sports, fitness and leisure education programs, and outdoor recreation activities.

The Lou Higgins Recreation Center is a social area where students can go to tone as well as socialize. It features workout spaces, training facility, gathering areas and more.

Service

In addition to its intrinsic and rewarding value, service benefits career preparation by helping students sample career choices, gain practical skills and establish key relationships. Each year BW students contribute thousands of hours of community service through:

  • Weekly programs with local agencies supporting community needs
  • Alternative break programs held during fall, winter, spring and summer
  • Project Affinity, an urban summer service program
  • International programs that combine service with cultural awareness
  • Service-learning initiatives that foster experiential learning, community awareness and civic responsibility

Sororities and Fraternities

Beyond the social benefits, BW's sororities and fraternities emphasize character development, leadership and community service. Scholarship is another important component. Chapters offer study sessions, study tables, scholarship awards and other incentives to help members excel. Sorority and fraternity recruitment occurs in the fall and spring.

Clubs and Organizations

BW has more than 100 campus groups whose focus includes student government, academic, diversity/cultural, media, recreation, and social – just to name a few. In addition to making friends, your student can gain valuable leadership, teamwork and communication skills, build networking contacts, boost awareness of social justice issues and more.
