Qualifications for Admission

Application Materials

How do I apply for admission into the CSI: A Science Forensics Academy?
Select the Application Materials link from the Related Links Menu on the CSI web page (www.bw.edu/csi). There you will find the links to the CSI Application and CSI Nomination forms. You may choose to complete the application online and then print the application and nomination forms (preferred) or print the forms and complete the forms by hand. Be sure to sign and complete your part of each form.  Secure a nomination of a former science teacher from one of your middle/junior high or high school science classes. Ask the teacher to place the nomination in a sealed envelope, write his/her name across the seal, and return the nomination to you. Place your application form and the envelope containing the nomination form into one envelope and mail it to the Academy Administrator. Applications must be post-marked by April 26, 2008 (extended deadline).  Do not submit electronic copies of the application.

When and how will I be notified if I am accepted?
All applications will be reviewed by the Academy Admissions Committee. Applicants will be notified by mail of their acceptance or denial by May 15, 2008.

Must I attend all of the Academy sessions?
Yes. Participants must be available for all of the summer and fall sessions of the Science Forensics Academy. Dates include June 15-20 and June 22-27, 2008 as well as September 6,13,20, and 27 (from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.) in the fall of 2008.

I understand that I will receive high school and college credit for my work at the Academy. Do I have to complete both the college credit requirements of the Academy and the high school requirements?
Yes, the program is designed to culminate in both high school and college credit when the requirements are successfully completed. You will be registered for college credit at B-W at the outset of the summer program. You will receive a transcript of your college credit at the conclusion.

I understand that CSI teams use advanced technology in many of their investigations. What technology skills and equipment will I need to successfully participate in the Academy?
If you have successfully completed your high school technology requirements and science courses to date, you will have most of the skills that you need to begin your training. Your Academy instructors and other technology personnel will teach you any other skills that may be required. Participants will receive hand-held devices to communicate and gather information in the field during the summer and fall sessions. There will also be laptops available for group work in the summer and fall. Students will use B-W’s course management system, Blackboard, for the entire Academy experience.

What are my expected costs for the Academy?
Except for very minor ‘pocket money’, students should not need any additional funds for the Academy program. Participating students receive room and board in college/university housing, college tuition, textbooks and supplies, electronic devices, and enrichment activity costs from the Ohio Board of Regents grant funds. Students do have to arrange for their own transportation to campus and home from the Academy. Transportation from B-W to CSU in the summer, however, is provided. Limited funds are available to assist qualified participants with travel to and from campus. In addition, all participants receive a stipend for their time spent at the Academy.

What is a stipend?
A stipend is an allowance or payment for services or completed work. Students will receive a total of $650 for participating in the program. Two thirds, or $430, will be paid at the conclusion of the summer program. The remainder, $220, will be paid after the fall sessions.

Must I stay in the residence halls during the summer sessions?
Yes, part of the overall learning experience comes from residing in a living/learning community.

Is it possible for a student to be dismissed from the Academy?
Yes, any student may be dismissed if he/she does not meet the academic and ethical standards of B-W and CSU and/or does not fulfill the requirements of the Academy. Students are also subject to the disciplinary code of all of the involved institutions. You can view the B-W and CSU codes, respectively at

What if I have more questions?
You can contact the Academy Administrator, Mr. James Emigh, by e-mail (preferred): csi@bw.edu or by calling (440) 826-5904.
