B-W: Recreation Center Renovation

Growth in popularity of education programs in the building including athletic training education, sport management and others required the addition of office space for faculty and coaches.

Baldwin-Wallace College expanded and renovated its physical education and recreation facilities in 2005. The $5 million project, which featured the addition of 19,000 sq. ft. and renovation of more than 14,000 sq. ft. to the 150,000 sq. ft. recreation center, helped the College accommodate expanding academic programs, athletic and recreation needs. The building also was named Lou Higgins Center, to recognize and honor Ms. Lorheta Higgins, whose gifts and bequest enabled the project.

New Fitness Space

		New aerobics/ group exercise room Doubled the size of the pre-existing weight room

		Expanded the pre-existing fitness center Expanded and upgraded fitness equipment holdings Added convenience lockers for students

Classroom/Laboratory Space

Created a new training suite for the Athletic Training academic program
Expanded the Exercise Physiology Laboratory
Added two classrooms

Office Space

Added 17 new spaces for faculty and coaches
Renovated 18 existing faculty and coach offices

Common Spaces

Renovated the Tressel Lounge
Expanded the west side entryway to improve building access and equipment check
Renovated pre-existing lobby
Renovated athletic archive area
Improved acoustics in the facility

Storage Space

Added storage space to the academic, sports and recreation programs

The project, which required approximately one year to complete, also was designed to accommodate future growth in the academic, athletic and recreation programs at the College.
