Seven B-W Cross Country and Track & Field Student Athletes Named Academic All-OAC

BEREA, OHIO – Seven members of the Baldwin-Wallace College cross country and track & field teams have been named to the 2009-10 Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference team.

Six Yellow Jacket women were honored with two repeat selections in seniors D’Arcy Hlavin (Berea) and Brittany Giesken (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf). First-year selections include juniors Krysten Kovach (North Royalton/Parma Padua Franciscan), Karin Coyne (Columbia Station/Columbia), Kim Chinn (Zanesville/West Muskingum) and Emily Oliver (Waynesburg/Sandy Valley).

For the men, senior Brandon Fast (Ashland/Senior) was named to the team for the first time.  Fast graduated last week Magna Cum Laude with a degree in business administration and finance and carried a 3.610 grade point average.  Fast competed in the javelin during the outdoor track and field season and posted a season-best throw of 171 feet, seven inches, good for second on the team. Fast also was a starting defensive lineman on the B-W football team and earned All-OAC and both Academic All-OAC and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors.

Hlavin graduated last week Magna Cum Laude with a degree in sports medicine and pre-physical therapy and carried a 3.694 grade point average.  The Dean’s List student who is a member of the Alpha Lambda and Chi Sigma Alpha honor societies was an Academic All-OAC and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV selection in 2008-09 and is a candidate for Academic All-District honors again this season.


Brandon Fast

Overall, Hlavin’s is one of the most celebrated women’s cross country and track student-athletes in school history. She is a three-time All-OAC honoree in cross country, including being the OAC Runner of the Year in 2008-09, twice earning All-Great Lakes Region honors and twice ran at the national meet.  In track, she is a multiple All-Ohio and OAC champion. She is provisionally qualified for next week’s NCAA Division III Championship meet in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs and was recently named as B-W’s Most Outstanding Senior Female Athlete.

Giesken graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.675 GPA in biology. She is a Dean’s List student and a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma and Alpha Lambda honor societies and is a Jacket Scholar. Last season, she was awarded the John F. and Ida E. Gibler Scholarship for academic achievement and an interest in medicine. This season, she was a member of the OAC champion cross country team and ran a leg on the OAC outdoor champion 4x800 relay team.

Kovach is a chemistry and pre-med major and Dean’s List student with a 3.835 GPA. The Alpha Lambda Honor Society member also was a member of the OAC champion cross country team and ran a leg on the OAC outdoor champion 4x800 relay team. Individually, she placed second during the OAC Outdoor Championships in the 1,500-meter run and fourth in the 800 meters.

Coyne is a pre-physical therapy and exercise science major with a 3.743 GPA. She is a Dean’s List student and a member of the Alpha Lambda Honor Society. She was the No.3 runner on the OAC-champion cross country team.

Chinn is a mass communications major and Dean’s List Student with a 3.734 GPA. She also is a member of the Alpha Lambda and Chi Alpha Sigma honor societies and is a Jacket Scholar.

Chinn was one of the top two runners on the OAC-champion cross country team and placed fifth as an individual at the league championship meet. During the indoor track season, she won the OAC 1,000-meter run in a time of 3:03.11, also setting a facility record and was second in the 1-mile run. At the 2010 OAC Outdoor Championships, Chinn was named the OAC Women's Distance Runner of the Meet as she ran on the first place 4x800-meter relay team and won both the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run. She is currently provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III National Meet in the 1,500-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Oliver was an honorable mention selection to the at-large team and is a chemistry major with a 3.357 GPA. She is a Dean’s List student and member of the American Chemical Society. During the indoor season, Oliver set a school-record in the pentathlon with 3,247 points and was subsequently named as the OAC Track Athlete of the Week on February 22. She also qualified for the NCAA Indoor National Meet and finished 15th in the pentathlon. During the outdoor season, Oliver was named as the OAC Field Event Athlete of the Week on April 5 for her efforts at the Liberty (Va.) University Invitational, where she hit the NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the heptathlon. Oliver recently scored a personal-best of 4,288 points in the heptathlon at the North Central (Ill.) Gregory Multi-Event on May 18-19.
