of the Year; Eight Yellow Jackets Also Make All-OAC Teams
BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College 24-year veteran Head Coach Jack Bethlenfalvy is the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year and senior James Daly (Akron/ Firestone) is the OAC Mark Lenssen Men’s Tennis Player of the Year. Both are repeat selections from a year ago.
The OAC Coach of the Year honor for Bethlenfalvy marks the second straight year and third time in his career (also 1999) that he has captured the accolade. This season, he led B-W to an 18-6 overall record, both the OAC regular season (9-0) and OAC Tournament titles and to a spot in this year’s NCAA Division III National Tournament. His team has 16 straight wins entering a 2:00 p.m. NCAA tourney match versus Albion College of Michigan on Friday, May 2 at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
In his 24 years at B-W, Bethlenfalvy, the winningest women’s tennis coach in OAC history, has a 265-171 record. During the past two years, he has guided his program to an outstanding, 43-11 record, including 24 consecutive wins against OAC competition and a 5-4 win a year ago against Albion in the NCAA tourney.
Daly, B-W’s number one singles and No.1 doubles player, is the Lenssen Award winner for the second straight season.
This season, Daly had a 28-3 singles mark and combined with two separate doubles partners for a 24-4 record as he led the Yellow Jackets to a 20-5 overall record. He owns B-W school single-season records for singles (29 in 2005), doubles (26 in 2005) and combination (55 in 2005) victories. Daly also owns school, OAC and Ohio collegiate career marks for singles (105 and 10-5-10), doubles (91 and 91-15) and combination (196 and 196-25) triumphs.
Daly is the third B-W male to be OAC Player of the Year (Bryan Bartunek in 2000 and Mike Wagner in 2005 and 2006) and third two-time winner in OAC history. He also is a four-time first-team All-OAC selection and helped B-W to a four-year record of 80-13. He is currently awaiting word from the NCAA as to whether he will be selected as an individual to the NCAA Tournament. That announcement comes on Tuesday, May 6.
In addition to Bethlenfalvy being the women’s Coach of the Year, seniors Tiffany Allison (Chagrin Falls/ Kenston) and Meggie Glassburn (Canton/ Jackson) were named as first-team All-OAC choices, freshman Caitlin Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) was tabbed to the second-team and junior Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y.) was named to the honorable mention squad. For both Allison and Glassburn, it marked their fourth straight All-OAC accolades, including Allison being a first-team choice all four seasons.
In addition to Daly being the Lenssen Award winner, he was a first-team All-OAC pick for the fourth straight year and was joined on the first-team by freshman Tyler Adams (Wheelersburg). Juniors Andy Redd (Archbold) and Jim Kucera (Mentor) were named honorable mention All-OAC. The All-OAC award is the second straight for Redd.
