BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women’s tennis team lost to Albion (Mich.) College, 5-0, today (Friday, May 2, 2008) in the first round of the NCAA Division III National Tournament at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. The loss ends B-W’s season.
With its loss, B-W ends its season at 18-7 overall while Albion is now 19-2 overall and plays top-seeded Denison University tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. The loss to Albion also ends a 16-match Yellow Jacket win streak.
In doubles play, Albion jumped out to 3-0 lead as the No.1 duo of freshman Shelley Zamier and sophomore Michelle Mulder defeated Yellow Jacket senior number one singles player Tiffany Allison (Chagrin Falls/ Kenston) and senior No.2 player Meggie Glassburn (Canton/ Jackson), 9-7. The B-W tandem actually led 7-6 at had a match point but could not put the Briton duo away.
In addition in doubles, B-W’s No.2 duo of freshman Caitlin Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and senior Krista Marshall (Medina/ Senior) lost to Albion’s No.2 tandem of senior Emily Gunderson and sophomore Anna Gunderson, 8-6, and the Yellow Jacket No.3 tandem of sophomore Andrea Essig (Conneaut/ Ashtabula Edgewood) and junior Alyssa Trampert (Orchard Park, N.Y./ Orchard Park) lost, 8-5. This season, Allison and Glassburn are now 18-10 overall, Pecinovsky and Marshall are 18-11 overall and Essig and Trampert are 2-2.
In singles play, Albion increased its lead to 4-0 when Emily Gunderson defeated Marshall at No.4 by the scores of 6-2 and 6-0. The loss dropped Marshall to 8-20 this season. Albion then closed out the match when Anna Gunderson defeated freshman Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/Green) at No.5 singles by the scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Pelosi ends her season with a 14-9 record.
Despite the 5-0 loss, Allison was tied at No.1 singles at 6-6, Glassburn was winning at No.2 by the scores of 6-4 and 4-3, Pecinovsky won the first set at No.3 singles by a 6-2 score but trailed in the second set by a 4-3 score and Trampert won the first set by a 6-3 margin and led the second set by a 4-1 score when they match was halted by the five-point rule (first team to score five points wins the match and all other matches are declared unfinished). Allison ends her season with a 13-13 mark, Glassburn was 13-10, Pecinovsky was 21-7, Trampert was 20-5 overall.
The loss to Albion completes an outstanding four years by Allison, Glassburn and Marshall. The trio combined to win 193 singles and 231 doubles matches. Allison and Glassburn each won 70 career singles matches to tie for third all-time and Marshall won 53. Allison finished 70-29 overall, Glassburn was 70-32 and Marshall was 53-52. In doubles play, Glassburn owns the B-W, OAC and Ohio collegiate record for women with 91 victories. She had a 91-27 career doubles slate. Allison won 69 doubles matches and had a 69-31 mark, and Marshall won 71 doubles matches and was 71-40 overall.
The B-W women had a 9-0 record during the OAC regular season and for the second straight season. B-W is the two-time OAC regular season champion, the two-time OAC Tournament champion, and last year became the first OAC women’s team to ever win a match in the NCAA Division III National Tournament when it defeated Albion, 5-4.
