BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women’s soccer team began its 2007 season today (Saturday, September 1) with a 2-1 victory against the State University of New York at Geneseo (SUNY-Geneseo) in the first round of the Penn State-Behrend Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Yellow Jackets now advance to play in the championship game tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. against St. Vincent (Pa.) College.
B-W lost the corner kick battle 5-3 and was outshot 15-12, but capitalized on scoring opportunities.
B-W jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior forward Whitney Zunic (Canfield) put the Yellow Jackets on the board in the 25th minute with her first goal of the season and the 15th of her career, giving her 34 career points. The goal was assisted by sophomore defender Natalie Fox (Canfield).
In the 50th minute freshman midfielder Linsey Clapacs (Willoughby Hills/South) scored her first career goal off a corner kick to give B-W a 2-0 advantage.
In goal, senior All-OAC goalie Michelle Neff (Strongsville) was a stonewall as usual, tallying 11 saves and allowing only one goal to Eileen Coyle (90th minute) in 90 minutes between the pipes.
Following its game tomorrow in the title match against St. Vincent, who won its opening-round game in a shootout, the Yellow Jackets return home and open the home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 5 against Adrian (Mich.) College at The George Finnie Stadium at 5:00 p.m. in the first game of a women’s and men’s doubleheader. Next Saturday, Sept. 8, the B-W men and women host a doubleheader at Finnie Stadium against Anderson (Ind.) University at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. The games follow a 1:00 p.m. afternoon football game between B-W and perennial NCAA Division III power and 20th-ranked Augustana (Ill.) College.
