BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women’s soccer team’s strong effort today (Sunday, September 2, 2007) fell just a bit short when the Yellow Jackets lost to Saint Vincent (Pa.) College, 2-1 on a penalty kick in overtime, in the championship game of the Penn State-Behrend Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania. B-W defeated SUNY-Geneseo (N.Y.), 2-1, on Saturday inthe first round.
In the title contest, B-W outshot Saint Vincent, 14-12, but a goal by SVC’s Alex Shasko at the 94:43 mark that ended the overtime affair.
After a scoreless first half, SVC jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Kylie Simonini scored at the 53:31 mark. B-W tied it at 1-1 at the 83:14 mark when senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference player Whitney Zunic (Canfield) scored her second goal of the season. This one came via an assist from All-OAC midfielder Allie Wojtkun (North Olmsted/ Magnificat). Wojtkun led B-W with five shots overall.
In goal, senior All-OAC goalie Michelle Neff (Strongsville) allowed a pair of goals as she faced 12 shots and made seven saves.
The Yellow Jackets return home and open the home schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 5 against Adrian (Mich.) College at The George Finnie Stadium at 5:00 p.m. in the first game of a women’s and men’s doubleheader. Next Saturday, Sept. 8, the B-W men and women host a doubleheader at Finnie Stadium against Anderson (Ind.) University at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. The games follow a 1:00 p.m. afternoon football game between B-W and perennial NCAA Division III power and 20th-ranked Augustana (Ill.) College.
